I''ve always bought the M&S pleat front stain resist ones and they look smart and have always lasted the year (DS is 9).

I've found the Asda ones that don't have any buttons, zips etc great. Only about £3 a pair but have worn much better than the Sainsburys ones I bought that went a bit fluffy and faded on the knees after a couple of weeks xx

It depends a lot on the body shape of your child. M&S, for example, work on quite a 'broad' body shape in general (though their sizing has some quirks and their newer slim fit ran ges are good) whereas Sainsburys work on a fairly small version of each size (DS would be 3 years above his chronological age there in general, though only 1 or 2 in other shops).

DS - very tall, slenderish but not excessively skinny - has always found BhS trousers excellent (not the adjustable waist ones, but the normal ones - though the 'long' versions are even better for tall boys). They have always lasted him a full year looking exactly the same as they did at the beginning. I do iron them, though.

Another vote for M&S here. DS is on the 50th centile for height and weight, so he is the average sized 5year old.
We tried Tesco first but they came up too begin the waist and he struggled to deal with a belt. M&S have adjustable waists so they were just fine, never needed ironing and lasted the whole of his reception year.

big in the waist damn you autocorrect.

teacherwith2kids · 15/08/2013 10:05

Exactly, Cardiff. DS is 95th centile height, 50th or so weight, so a very different body shape and although you CAN scrunch the M&S trousers up to git him he looks a little pantaloonish round the bottom!

(He's now in senior school, who have just decreed a single trouser style. No adjustable waist, and different lengths ONLY available above a certain waist size. So i have e-mailed the school asking for a realistic alternative to him wearing either a) clown-braces to hold up the waist of the right length trousers or b) 3/4 length legs. Sadly the construction of the waistband doesn't allow me to add elastic to it.)

I buy John Lewis trousers. DS gives his trousers a hard time but still look perfect at the end of the year. There is no zips/buttons but there is a small metal clip inside to slide together. DS hasn't had any difficulty managing it. They were £8 a pair I think.

For reception I'd say the ones with no fastenings at all, some schools will also allow yr R to wear grey school shorts until the weather changes which is even easier!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/08/2013 22:49

Well, my DS is as skinny as they come, short as well (wears trousers two years below his age, so started in age 3 and is now in 7's at age 9, the M&S ones have always fitted perfectly (they have adjustable waists). No fastenings below age 7 (or at least not when I bought them). We've never needed slim fit ones.

They're allowed shorts all year round if they want (and some do) at his school.

teacherwith2kids · 16/08/2013 07:39

Whoknows - I suspect short and skinny would be fine for M&S. Problem with DS is he needs a waist 2 years below his age and a length 2 years above.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 16/08/2013 07:45

That must be difficult. I've never tried any others to be honest, so no idea how they compare for different body sizes. I don't know what I'd do without adjustable waists.
