Hi:

I'm just a parent but having been asked about android apps before and frustrated I could only find apple-based stuff - I might as well put this to good use:

Oxford School Improvement have these two newsletters with recommendations for apps:

fds.oup.com/www.oup.com/pdf/oxed/primary/apps-for-teachers.pdf

fds.oup.com/www.oup.com/pdf/oxed/primary/top-10-maths-apps.pdf - this is KS2 but some overlap for Y2.

-----------
Herfordshire LEA has these recommendations:

www.lea.herts.sch.uk/appslist/ks1.html

------------

mrz posted this link for apps a while back: www.apps4primaryschools.co.uk/

-----------

This is a US distributer but Ocean House Media does a lot of APPS for Smithsonian. Info here: www.oceanhousemedia.com/products/smithsonian/ - looks good for dinasours and mammoths (megafauna).

--------

Puzzle solving games which our DDs love:

Cut the rope
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zeptolab.ctr.paid&hl=en - you're a hungry little monster who needs to work out how to get the sweetie/ cupcake/ donut/ etc... off the rope and into your mouth. It's not 'educational' per se - but the problem solving skills involved must surely be a good thing.

Slice it
itunes.apple.com/gb/app/slice-it!-begins/id402143190?mt=8
This is free on apple itunes - the game is to divide shapes into even parts. Great for learning visually about fractions/ division and symmetry. Again not obviously educational per se - but good for problem solving skills.

------

Brother & S-I-L teach in US a recommend PBS Kids apps (this would be the US equivalent of CBeebies/ CBBC) - mostly for iphone/ ipad: info here: pbskids.org/mobile/?fromMobileShell - not sure if they can be downloaded to UK or not, but worth a look. I think they're all free. Obviously spelling apps may not be o.k. for UK - but math apps probably are.
