Hi there.

I would like some advise on my move to Glasgow.i will be working in southern general for a year and commuting most weekends to London.
My budget is 70000£ and I want a 1or 2 bed house/flat with ease of commute to work and public transport use to the airport.nearby swimming pool and gym is a must.also ease of parking and quiet location would be an advantage.can Glaswegians help please?

Are you looking to purchase?

And, as this post is in primary education, is this the type of school your child will attend?

Ah, I see. Was just thinking that you might be far more responses if you post in Chat, for example.

The area around the Southern is not cheap so £70,000 might not get you much.

How about looking here for a start: www.gspc.co.uk/here and enter the postcode for Southern General to see what you can get for that.

Thanx for the info.

I think a lot of people get this idea that Scotland is really cheap. Some areas, usually ones of deprivation or ones with few job prospects, are, but in cities like Edinburgh (3rd most expensive in the UK and with lower wages than the top 2), Glasgow and Aberdeen this is definitely not the case for areas with good transport, jobs and amenities.

expatinscotland · 02/08/2013 16:55

Houses around that area are in the majority, too, with a price to match, but flats are abundant.

It might be more prudent to rent for a bit and get a better knowledge of where would best suit you.

70000 won't buy you much in nice parts of glasgow. The west end near to the clyde tunnel easy for the southern general about 110000 for a one bed. For two years it might be better to rent.

Feel free to pm for any advice.

I'm assuming with a two year contract that you might be a doctor?

expatinscotland · 02/08/2013 18:38

Sorry, meant to say minority! For houses, that is, in that part of town. But yeah, more like £110-£120 for one-bed flat and then, really, I'd rent first and get a better feel for it all. Some areas are nice, but fairly loud, around there.

Renfrew is a bit further out, but you would be near the David Lloyd gym, which has a pool, and is fairly newly refurbished. Plus you would be near the M8, and the drive to the Southern wouldn't be bad at all - I live out past Paisley and I can drive into the centre of Glasgow in under half an hour. My dh commutes in on the bus - the public transport is good, so you might want to look a bit further out but near transport links.

Hope that helps.

Oh, and we moved up here 5 years ago, from Essex, and I can't imagine ever leaving Scotland, or the area we live in now. Glasgow is a lovely city, and there is so much on the doorstep - I hope you will be as happy as us!
