How to improve confidence

Obviously my dd is at the expected level for the end of year 2 but she is very unconfident so she doesn't speak out, panics at the slightest thing which particualrly shows in any form of speaking and listening/science where you have to generate ideas. Because i have three younger children, we haven't done anything outside school for ages and I very rarely hear her read etc and I wonder what I could do to improve her confidence in general and thinking skills. Her levels just now ( at the end of year 2) were:

Science 2
writing 2a
reading 3
maths 3
speaking and listening 2

so not behind but she hardly says anything in class and is unable to think about anything other than just following learnt rules

Watching with interest as my DS sounds exactly like that!

drama, martial arts, brownies, sport? Something that she thoroughly enjoys with a slightly social element to it.

Ds1 was like this though he is younger. I started him at a drama group six months ago. It has made a huge difference to him, he is much more confidant now.
