Male primary teachers, are they as rare as hens teeth?

just wondering. My Dd has just left primary and she had 4 male teachers out of 7 . Is that unusual?

DS had a male teacher in yrs 1 and 2 (2 different ones). He is going into yr4 in September.

simpson · 24/07/2013 09:56

Forgot to say he will have a male TA next year.

Kithulu · 24/07/2013 09:57

Nope, our primary has a 2 class intake, 4 male teachers, reception, yr2, yr4, yr5 and yr6.

NewNameForNewTerm · 24/07/2013 09:57

Very unusual to have that many. Is it a large school? It is an interesting debate why primary teaching is so unappealing to men. Look at the % if male/female teachers, then look at the % of male/female heads Another interesting debate.

pooka · 24/07/2013 10:02

2 form entry here, male HT and assistant head. 5 male teachers.

Very unusual locally - know other schools with 1 male teacher in whole 2 form entry staff.

insanityscratching · 24/07/2013 10:09

2 form entry here 4 male teachers, male HT and 6 male TA's. The male TA in dd's class is a favourite with all the children, dd says "he's like my big brother only balder"

snotfunny · 24/07/2013 10:10

Yes- my school is a 2 form entry with one male teacher. I'm not sure why it's so unusual to have many men. We do have quite a few male students sent to us, though. It's largely because there's a (rather unfounded) assumption that men are better at discipline and mine is an extremely 'challenging' school. The college seems to send us all their male trainees for that reason.

Theas18 · 24/07/2013 10:14

Depends on the school and area I guess..

Not as rare as some people think but generally not the 50% of teachers that they probably should be.

Tiggles · 24/07/2013 10:16

We have 5 teachers (including head), 2 are male.

redskyatnight · 24/07/2013 10:22

About 50% of the teachers in DC's junior school are male.

DS and DD will both have male teachers next year.

MaryPoppinsBag · 24/07/2013 10:24

My son's school is a Primary and have Male teachers in Y2, Y3, Y5 and Y6 plus a male teaching assistant and a music teacher / TA who is a man. Plus a floating temporary teacher who is male.

According to the other staff (I'm a governor) It has had a positive impact on the children. My son is to be taught by one of the male teachers next year and he is just fantastic.

twinkle1010 · 24/07/2013 11:09

Next year we will have five male teachers, two male TAs and the headteacher is male. I think this is quite unusual for the area.

VelvetStrider · 24/07/2013 11:14

2 out of 18, plus a few TAs and additional needs teachers. One of the male teachers is very shouty though and doesn't have a natural affinity with children, so a lot of parents request other classes for their DCs!

CircassianLeyla · 24/07/2013 11:14

We have three class teachers, one in EYFS and two in KS1 as well as a couple if TAs, head teacher, music teacher and PE teacher.

I have experience if two if the three teachers and one TA, they are incredible. We also have a lot of incredible female teachers. We have another new one started in ks1 too. I would like to see another in KS2 maybe yr 5-6.

Fanjango · 24/07/2013 11:16

My dc's school has just 2 make staff members. One of them is the site managerGrin

Fanjango · 24/07/2013 11:16

Male... Bloody autocorrect

Lorelai · 24/07/2013 11:18

My DDs primary school (2 form entry plus nursery) has no male teachers at all. It is a shame :(

DearlyDepartedMrsFinch · 24/07/2013 11:35

Two form entry, with 3 male teachers, so 3/14. Female HT, female TAs.

lljkk · 24/07/2013 11:46

2/6 years for DC1. 3/7 for DC2 (last 3). Will be 2/6 for DC3.

Treagues · 24/07/2013 11:53

Know a man who trained as a primary teacher.
From his first job, he was told outright that he would be fast-tracked towards a deputy headship.
He wanted to teach so said no. Was not kept on. Has found actual teaching hard to break into.

noramum · 24/07/2013 12:13

DD is at an Infant, 7 classes not a single male teacher. She had a male trainee teacher last term whom they all adored and he w great with them. He now got a Reception class somewhere, good luck for him. Unfortunatley there was no opening in DD's school.

The attached Junior has a male head but I don't know if there are any other male teachers. I very much hope so as it is good for the children.

Itsjustafleshwound · 24/07/2013 12:23

Between the Infant and junior school (2 FE) we have no male teachers. The junior school has a male head, but the board of governors and and local council education dept is male heavy...

There is the token groundsman across both sites

BlameItOnTheBogey · 24/07/2013 12:45

IN DS' school (not in the UK), they have a policy of balancing each year group with one male and one female teacher. Not sure what I think about this to be honest (because it must mean that when recruiting, gender is the over-riding consideration) but it does mean that ds gets a balance of genders throughout the school.
