Help! Need to teach DS some Spanish in next 3 weeks.

DS is just about to start S1 in secondary school in Scotland - we've been told he'll be learning Spanish as a modern language as that is the language taught in all the feeder primaries. DS didn't study Spanish in either of his previous primary schools (we've just moved back to Scotland) so I've promised him I'll give him a bit of a Spanish crash course in the basics over the next few weeks before he starts school in August. I don't speak Spanish either but thought we could do it together - eek!

Can anyone point me to a website which shows what the expected standard would be for a modern language by the end of primary school - I'm guessing colours, introductions, etc etc. Also has anyone come across any good websites/resources (ideally free but if needs must I'll pay!) that we could use to practice the basics. I find learning languages aurally v hard and suspect DS might too (he hasn't got a great ear) so any sites that explain (in simple terms) how the language actually works in technical terms would be fab (like how to identify masculine/feminine, word order etc).

Thanks in advance for any advice, I'm feeling a bit daunted. Grin

The BBC have a language course on their web site; www.bbc.co.uk/languages/ Smile

The book people have some spanish language stuff - don't know how good they are but quite reasonably priced.
Do you know anyone who can tell you what textbooks were used in the primaries or even what they use in the secondary?

Thanks Lady and scrappy. I've had a look at the BBC website lady and will def be using it but I guess what I'm looking for is something even more basic initially - something explaining how the language works as opposed to giving me vocab iykwim. I know that sounds stupidly anal but I can't just plunge right into vocab without having any kind of context (even if I keep it to myself and don't bore DS with the details).

scrappy - totally new to the area so don't know anyone yet (insert tragic emoticon).

Ds uses Mira. You can probably get these off Amazon but he's said that you'll need the discs as a lot of the work is listening exercises. He's been learning for a couple of years and is rather good. I can get him to send you some tips if you want?

LadyMaryQuiteContrary · 20/07/2013 13:58

www.amazon.co.uk/Mira-Pupil-Book-Year-starters/dp/0435387650/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374324980&sr=8-1&keywords=mira+spanish Ds says it will be really hard without the discs. Some of the work involves group work as well as copying and listening but he's said it was a good book.

OOh - thanks Lady - just had a look at Mira on Amazon and judging by the contents page it's the kind of thing I'm looking for. Thank-you for the offer of tips - I may well take your DS up on it if I get stuck! :)

Someone linked to this site the other day. It looks good.

What about Rosetta Stone? Pricy but maybe you can get it off eBay?

Edinbugger · 20/07/2013 16:01

Thanks Clay and Drink - I wondered about Rosetta Stone but am a bit worried about the price. Have you used it drink - I need to look up some reviews!

Clay that website is great - thanks for the link. Just looked at the first lesson and it seems very anal which suits me great! :)

I like the "First Fun with Spanish" DVD. It's quite a good cartoon with lots of vocabulary.
