Did your DCs reception report include their band (emerging, expected or exceeding)? If not then your school did not follow the statutory requirement ...

You can follow this link and see the DfES state in their FAQs:

What information about EYFS Profile assessments should be reported to parents?
Statutory requirements state that parents should be told the band (emerging, expected or exceeding) that the child has attained for each of the 17 ELGs. Good practice would be to support this judgement with some further explanation and detail. How this is presented is the school?s decision, as long as the key information is included.

The key information being their banding. Whilst I think most parents have received this information not all have Confused

The banding is useless and has not been assesed equally by teachers in same schools never mind different schools around the country. Waste of time and causing needless worry for parents and other parents thinking their child has acheived a higher level than they actually have. Give a year or so and it might be more usefull but now id rather just have a written report because the banding was as much use ans a chocolate fire guard.

piprabbit · 19/07/2013 11:17

Yes - my DS's report included the bands for all the different areas in addition to written reports.

TheBakeryQueen · 19/07/2013 19:56

The report was a really positive, in depth and personal account of my son's strengths and weaknesses.

It mentioned the levels for literacy & numeracy only and in a really low key manner.

Do these reports/grades also apply to nursery children or not.... Age 3-4?

piprabbit · 20/07/2013 15:08

I think the bandings are reported at the end of EYFS - as the children finish YR and prepare to move in Y1.

Your child's nursery will be keeping records of their progress through the EYFS and you should be able to ask to have a look at the records. My DS's nursery invited parents in to an open evening to look at their records and talk to staff.

The personal part of dd's report was lovely and really well written and thought out as it always is from her school.

The banding section was, in the words of her teacher 'a completely pointless waste of time' I expect she gave the same mark and comments to pretty much every child and I do not blame her in the slightest.

Cat98 · 20/07/2013 16:52

We didnt have this but we're in wales so I think it's different.

hairylittlegoblin · 20/07/2013 17:00

I'd rather my child's teacher were devoting his/her time to teaching or to the very personal and thoughtful report we received than to assessing 17 pointless levels.

I know my child's strengths and areas for development. So does her teacher, as reflected in the report. It would be really nice if the Government could treat teachers as the professionals they are. I'd love to see the reaction if Cabinet Ministers had to rate every member of their team for effectiveness across 17 areas of development.

Rant over. As you were. Grin

exoticfruits · 20/07/2013 17:12

Well said hairylitlegoblin
Utterly pointless waste of time.

thecatfromjapan · 20/07/2013 17:24

hairylittlegoblin expressed my sentiments on this issue rather well.

My dd's report included a statement about how she was doing emotionally and socially. I was so pleased to read that and was very glad the teacher had taken the time to a. notice b. include it in the report. I'll bet I'm not alone in liking that sort of thing, and relating to it a lot more, than all the "target" business (which, for all its wordiness always seems a little vague and open to wobbly application).

Babouche · 20/07/2013 17:30

123littlepugs I got an EYFS nursery report complete with bandings, photographs of DS doing the various activities to illustrate all 17 sections as well as a more meaningful personal paragraph about his progress & personality.

Lara2 · 21/07/2013 14:02

It's not just the levels we have to report, it's also the characteristics of effective learning. Reception reports should have contained both.

twistyfeet · 21/07/2013 14:11

No but I dont know what it all means anyhow. They just said she is performing better than expected but way below NC levels. She is happy in school and loves it. Does me.

Periwinkle007 · 22/07/2013 13:13

we didn't get levels - I have asked to see them just out of curiosity.

The bit I had read online about the reporting (in one of the EYFS documents) I thought had said they had to report on it to parents but it didn't say they had to state the levels and it did say something about reporting it not as just a list. our school used the wording from the expected categories and put that into written report rather than the levels.

Owllady · 22/07/2013 13:17

they were just 1, 2 and 3 for each erm subject/heading
so 1 was below expected, 2 was expected, 3 was higher then expected
they are 4 and 5 though, they don't even have to be in formal education until next year if you chose not to send them!
