DD's spelling words - Y1

We live in Australia so DD is currently mid-way through year 1. She is one of the younger ones in the class.

This weeks' spelling words are:

alfoil (Australian tinfoil)
annoying
voice
royal
boisterous
hoist
oyster
rejoice

Personally, I think these words are really hard for her. In term 2, they were things like dirt/bird/turn etc.

Is this step up in the third term of y1 normal? Can any teachers out there give me some tips on how to teach her to remember these spellings?

My DD is in year 5 now so I am having trouble remembering the kind of thing she had in year 1 but they seem a bit much. At my DD's school they have spelling groups based on ability & some of those words may have possibly appeared on the list for the highest group but "boisterous" is just getting a bit over the top in my opinion. When my DD was in year 1 she had only just managed to start reading at all, luckily it all clicked in about half way through the year or they were seriously considering repeating her. If your DD is finding them too hard have a chat to the teacher, they don't sound like typical year 1 words for a basic class list

Is she a good speller?
All those words are obviously examples of the oi/oy sound.
They are certainly not unlike ones my (good speller) DD had at this stage.

If they are too hard for her, obviously that's an issue and you should raise it.

They are not unlike words that DD gets, though I agree boisterous is rather tricky.

Recent harder words we have had are position, laughing, television and relative.

I'd just like to say though, despite the fact DD has an excellent memory for spellings and has in fact never got one wrong in a test. It rarely occurs to her to apply them in her writing!

Thank you - so it seems within the reslms of possibilty. She seems to have memorised them but it took quite a lot of repetition.

I can't seem to find any easy strategies for teaching spelling words, so I will talk to her teacher to find out if these are tre types of words we will be getting and see what she says.

DD1 had this in Year 2 - but she was in a lower ability group (so others had this in Year 1).

We dealt with this list by separating 'oi' and 'oy' words and making mad sentences up.

The boisterous voice shouted hoist that alfoil & rejoice!

The royal oyster was ever so annoying.

this is about teaching 'oy' sound spellings 'oi' or 'oy' - it is a phoneme typically taught around now - so it isn't crazy to introduce it - but I agree it is a difficult list - we had 'choir' instead of alfoil so our mad sentence was:

The boisterous choir hoisted the flag and raised voice to sing rejoice!

DD1 was able to remember which spelling of the 'oy' sound by remembering the mad sentences.

We also have recently found squeebles (an APP for either android or ipad): www.keystagefun.co.uk/squeebles-spelling.html - it requires you spending time saying the words and typing in the correct spelling, but after that it is just a video game for your DCs to practice. Both girls have found practicing for 'traditional spelling lists' more entertaining this way.

Well, that's utterly bonkers. 'Choir' doesn't have an /oy/ sound in it.

List is fine so long as child has been taught all the other correspondences in the words.

I don't send spelling lists home but my Y1 class have been working on words like enjoyable, disappointment, royalty, moisture, ointment, appointment, oyster, destroy in class.

The oy/oi digraphs are taught near the beginning of phase five in letters and sounds. My reception class have all learnt these digraphs and would have a good go at using the correct one. I was going to say teach her that oi is never the end sound in a word and oy is usually an end sound but can also be used as a medial sound. Unfortunately the words on your dd's list don't follow this pattern. Bummer! I love the idea of putting the words into a funny sentence! Boisterous is not too tricky a word to learn if she sounds it out and knows the ous ending.

Don't like spelling lists at all, but at least those have a connection - ds's are totally random and pointless..
