So, be honest and say what do you think of my DD's report

She is 6, April born, Y1. I put question marks where I don't understand.

Basically report says:

  • Steady progress/appropriate response/level of concentration on the carpet improved but still an area that needed focusing on. (?)

English
Achievement= below expectation/ Effort & Progress= above expectation.(?)
-Trying very hard at reading and using strategies blablabla, increase amount of reading specially during holidays to ensure skills are ready for Y2

  • Focus on writing, full stops and capital letters to continue into Y2 but good progress in this area.

Maths/Science/ICT/Geography/History/Design&Technology/R.E/PSHCE = in line with expectation.

Art
Achievement and Effort = above expectation (?)
Progress = In line with expectation (?)

P.E = Achievement/Effort/Progress = above expectation

General Comments
DD has been good fun to teach, great sense of humour, brings a lot of enthusiasm, improvement in writing, trying really hard on phonics, improved focus, completing work to a good standard/ very arty&dramatic nature...blablabla

They don't mention on the report though that there are 2 languages spoken at home, they used only English even though they know well I am 'forein' and it was discussed on the Reception teacher's visit last year. But it probably doesn't matter, it is just a tiny bit disappointed to see: Languages spoken at home: English. When I try very hard to use my language and culture at home too.

I know I am being PFB.

Doesn't help that her native English speaker family does't like reading and I am the only one who reads for her (with my 'forein' accent) or listens to her reading ....
I am the only person she sees reading at home, I am always reading away anything that got an alphabet on it...

Hope she will click in Y2 and start reading better, she is making such a effort. Tonight she was telling me the importance of being literate, bless her.

She is from this week on Oxford Reading Tree Stage 4 - Book band 4 blue

She's doing great

Just enjoy the summer & relax!

Dorange · 16/07/2013 23:00

Thanks I will
We are getting ready for our holidays

Just would like to hear if it is possible that a child who isn't a great reader from start to catch up

I think she's doing fine (I also have a 6 year old in Y1). OK, she might not be the best reader in the class at this stage, but what sounds really clear in the report is that she's trying hard - this is so important and will be important for her whole life, long after she's learnt to read fluently. A child who doesn't give up when it's hard is a child who will do well.

Dorange · 16/07/2013 23:26

Yes, I am very pleased with her trying hard, she sometimes is scared of making mistakes when it is related to school work, but has been more relaxed lately.

Great work all round, so much more important that she is putting in the effort and you care about it too, enjoy your summer and enjoy some books together, don't neglect that second language either, we missed doing this with our two and its one of our biggest regrets.

ljny · 17/07/2013 00:18

In the long run, she has great work habits - persistent, puts in effort. I'm betting she'll shoot ahead sometime in the next few years.

Pity they forgot to note that a second language is spoken at home. I have friends who started school speaking little English, sometimes it takes longer for their reading to catch up - but the ones I know did extremely well academically, went to top universities, and had the advantage of being fluent in two languages.

You're doing everything right. Don't worry, she'll pick up on that. Bet she catches up over the next year or so.

trinity0097 · 17/07/2013 06:35

It sounds like she tries hard but isn't above average academically (nothing wrong with that!). But that her concentration could improve when working on the carpet, but this will come, she's only small.

Periwinkle007 · 17/07/2013 10:34

I think it is wonderful that she obviously works hard and is making progress, she can catch up so don't worry about that. just keep reading and enjoying books over the summer and encourage her. you can show her it is ok to make a mistake too by maybe making a couple of deliberate silly mistakes at home and commenting 'oh silly mummy, i got that wrong' so she sees that there is no shame in not always being right.

I would probably if I was you mention quickly to the teacher that she speaks 2 languages at home so could they check it is recorded on her file as such. It isn't a big issue but it is worth making sure of it.

Dorange · 17/07/2013 13:31

ok, I will talk to the teachers today so she can check 2 languages in her record, but I'm sure they have this info.

I'm just wondering if the report is sugar coated?
Do the teachers really disclose the negative stuff e.g. if a child is below than expected in many areas or is lazy or has behavior issues..?
