End of year 2 foundation phase report Wales

Hi, can I ask for some help with this too please.

I think DS has had a pretty bad end of foundation phase report. We are going in to school tomorrow to speak to his teacher as we were not aware that he wasn't doing that well until today. DH and I met her on parents eve and she said he was improving and now I find out that he is around outcome 3/4/5. I have guessed this from looking at the link from the other thread on this topic. The report from the school is really vague with lots of 'can almost' and 'he is beginning to. . ' type language.

We are English but it is a welsh medium school. I am really worried that the learning of welsh has knocked him back. He struggles with reading. He has been taught in welsh only. His reading is in welsh and the recent tests I think were in welsh too. He can speak welsh though. That seems to be the schools main aim.

I am worried that we have let DS down. That he is struggling and we didn't realise. I don't know what to do. We don't do lots of school work at home. DH and I work long hours and DS is usually tired after school and doesn't want to do work. He is young in the year too. Maybe we should get a load of work books or a tutor or something. Hoping it is not too late to help him. We do not really want to move him as he is happy there and it is a nice friendly school.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated especially on what to ask his teacher and how to help him in the future.

on phone so please ignore odd typos.
I guess the first question is how is his Welsh, as in his outcome in Welsh as I would assume if he didn't make outcome 5 in Welsh (or at least 5 for speaking ) it would put him at a disadvantage in everything else.
I'm 99%sure u should have been given his outcomes and not had to work them out in year 2. you should also have been given clear targets of what he needs to do next.
he should be outcome 5 but won't be given 5 unless working unsupported at very high 5 or at low 6 so ask to know exactly where he is eg could be very nearly 5 but just needs little more time to get there as still supported in some areas.
when ds1 was struggling I asked his teacher for a list of specific things to work on in English and maths (English medium) then when he did homework we specificallay looked at them so he knew what he was aiming to do.
do you speak any Welsh? can u talk in Welsh in the evenings together?

Hi little miss thanks for answering.

We saw the teacher and head today and found out he is mainly outcome 5. They didn't give us the outcomes in the report but did when we asked. His welsh was outcome 4 I think so like you say puts him at a disadvantage with the other subjects.

Next year the teaching is in English more so hopefully he should catch up. We are going to practise spellings and sentance construction with him in the holidays and some maths too.
