Year 5 results and Surrey grammars

I fear I may regret asking this... donning my thicker skin as I write. My DS got 5C in Maths and Reading in the May of Year 5, and 4C for Writing (has yet to get to grips with full stops and capital letters). I do know he's doing absolutely fine; I also realise many other kids attain these levels, but I'm very proud of him nonetheless. My question is: provided he passes the selective elegibility test and the subsequent school examinations, does anyone have a feel for whether it's worth using up a space on my CAF for Wallington County, Wilson's or Sutton grammars bearing in mind that we will be at the bottom of the pile from the point of view of distance so he would have to be comfortably within the ability range to be offered a place? Or are the kids who get into these grammars usually getting 5Bs or 5As before they even go into Y6, so he is unlikely to make the cut? Hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance.

I agree, most of our children who go there are already 5bs in reading, writing and maths at the end of y5. They tend to be our level 6s in the Y6 SATs. From the levels you have given, he will need to make accelerated progress in writing before the tests.
All the best.
