Inset days - which day of the week is most common

DS1 is starting school in September and so I'm having to re-jig my work pattern. I'm keeping 1 day a week free so which day will most inset days fall on? Or do schools tend to rotate them? I have in my mind that they're normally Mondays and so I'll keep that as my non-working day to save using leave. Make sense??

Usually on my days off! Seriously it tends to be a Monday and Tuesday but I think all schools differ round here.

DS' school is a polling station, and they normally try to match Inset days to major elections (such as the general election). For elections with an anticipated crap turnout (such as the police commissioner fiasco) they normally only close part of the school.

usually the day before the children return to school in the Autumn, Spring and Summer Terms then the other two (in our school at least) depend on specific training needs;if we require and external provider it will depend on their availability so could be any day of the week.

Mondays and Fridays. Usually Fridays. They should be published well in advance and total 5 days in state schools.

Mondays and Fridays are most common, but you will use a lot more of your time going in to school for assemblies / sports days / plays / workshops etc., and they can be on different days.... possibly leaning towards Friday being the most popular day for those things, but, in all honesty, they move around a lot
The other thing to check out is how your annual leave works out in terms of Bank Holidays, of which 4 are always on a Monday, 1 is always a Friday, and 3 move each year. If you are getting 4/5 of the entitlement, but have to take a full day each time there is a BH, then you end up using your annual leave to cover those bits of days if you work on a Monday, but kind of 'gain' a few hours if you don't work on a Monday.

Go on your school website and look and their term dates this year. That will give you the best idea.

I have Monday off. This year I've had to 'find' two Tuesdays for inset days.

I'm a teacher who doesn't work Mondays. My school's INSET days this year have all been on Mondays, including the Occasional Day and a couple of Bank Holidays (so I don't get the additional benefit of those). Just checked the dates for the next two years and the same applies!

Our county council publishes a calendar with children's holidays marked on it. Our inset days have to be taken in the children's holidays so it would make no difference.
There is a 1 day holiday in the middle of the week to coincide with the county show, but otherwise holidays are blocks of time.

Ours are Mondays and Fridays normally, occasionally they have two together ie Mon and Tue, or Thur and Fri.

Nearly all the things that it is nice to go to school for (class assemblies, sports day, harvest festival etc) seem to be Thurs or Fri. I would try and have Fridays free if I only had one day off a week.

ours seem to be the day before the autumn term starts which is a tuesday this year and I think was last year too, friday or monday to extend half term, I think this year we had one half term with both extra days off and the other two had the friday off if I remember right.
not had any just randomly during a week.
this year (reception) we have had a nativity, a class assembly, an open afternoon and a sports day. think that is all of them. they have all been tue/wed/thur and a mix of morning and afternoon.

Depends on the school, ours is always on a Monday, it drives me nuts. Seriously, why can't they just rotate it?

Parents moan about them anyway, particularly as there still seems to be a widely-held misconception that they're taken from teaching days.

Fair point but the could at least alternate between Mondays and Fridays. Its just so unfair on people who only work for part of the week.

Ours always fall on the Monday sometimes Tuesday as well after a school Holiday.

Mondays or Fridays would be the most common.

I would say working the end or middle of the week is best as then you don't "lose" and BH Mondays!
