Costume angst!!

I never seem to get it right Sad Last year on Roald Dahl day school gave the choice of wearing a costume or something yellow. As it was just after DD had started I thought we'd take it easy and just have yellow socks. But when we arrived a school nearly child was wearing a costume so I felt a bit sad for DD. She loves dressing up normally so I thought, ah, we'll know for next time.

Today was Water Aid day and there was the choice of wearing a sea creature costume or something blue. So we decided DD would go as a jellyfish and spent a long time decorating a pink umbrella, making it all sparkly etc. And she was REALLY looking forward to today. When we got in the playground, there were NO costumes. Everyone was just wearing blue. Sad poor old DD looked very glum and I felt a bit like crying [over emotional mum emoticon]

Who would guess school dressing up days would cause so much angst!!

Life needs a few sparkly pink jellyfish in a sea full of blue bores!
I bet she looked fabulous and unique!
(Sorry no actual help to offer)

After detailed analysis Grin it's all about amount of effort required. Sea creature much effort, not many costumes out there to buy. Roald Dahl day lots of human characters you can cobble together from existing wardrobe at last minute eg Matilda.

DS's school does a whole KS2 show next Thursday. We have yet to be told what costume we have to magic out of thin air (school never supply).

iseemnodust thank you for the psychological analysis. :) I think the best thing to do is survey all the parents first so that I can go with the consensus.

Poor old DD, I hope this isn't the kind of thing she remembers. I forgot to mention I also sent her in her uniform on pyjama day because I didn't think many children would actually want to wear pyjamas. I am so rubbish :(

I like what Princess KitKat said!

I bet the teachers make a fuss about how much effort she has made. I HATE dressing up days because it is so easy to forget or get it wrong.

My daughter said at their most recent one they had been told they could wear face paint with their outfit so I carefully did her face paint to match her outfit but only one other child had face paint and it was just a tiny bit on a cheek. She really stood out but she did get a mention in assembly by the head who commented how much he liked her face paint.

great to be unique, make it positive

Thanks, this is all good advice. :) Yes I can see how people can hate dressing up days now Periwinkle! I am feeling jaded already and DD is only in reception...

Maybe I can tell DD that everyone else was in costume too, as the sea she is swimming in?
