Reception uniform....clueless

It's been quite a few years since I was dragged in to try on my lovely Trutex brown skirt and jumper and my DS is starting reception in September and the list provided has thrown me a little as it's a bit ambiguous.

He's not at the school nursery and I don't know anyone at the school, don't live around the corner etc so never see kids going to it and only website and list to go on.

For reception, he will wear the same as the nursery: jogging bottoms and school sweatshirt plus white polo top. We don't have a tumble dryer so have bought four pairs of bottoms (one to keep at school for accidents), three sweatshirts and 6 polo shirts. Does this sound reasonable?

They also say that the children should wear trainers plus plimsolls for PE but they don't say they can't wear shoes. Would it really matter if he wore shoes? I wasn't sure if wearing trainers all day would offer good enough support.

The overcoats are supposed to be plain navy or black but in the Reception gallery pictures, there are some pics of a few children wearing pink, multi-coloured coats. Do you think that means that the school aren't really that strict about coats as DS has a great winter coat from last year which he isn't going to get much wear out of now.

Sorry for the daft questions but I had jury service on the day of the intro meeting for parents and DH wasn't a lot of use! There is a half hour induction session for new children next week but I didn't want to ask the teacher these types of questions as she will think I am clueless. She'd be right about that!

My DS1 is just about to finish reception

We don't have a tumble dryer either, I would go for more than 4 pairs of trousers especially if 1 pair is going to be at school as a spare. 6 would be better, then you can do only 1 wash a week. Also with only 3 sweatshirts you'll be washing them all the time and they take ages to dry in winter - so I'd go for more of them too (I bought 3 jumpers & should have got at least 1 more). DS1 comes home covered in paint, food & dirt every day so needs a full change of clothes - 6 polo shirts here too...

Trainers would probably be fine, my DS has black startrite shoes but a lot of the boys wear black trainer-type shoes and they seem ok.

I honestly wouldn't feel bad about asking the teacher all of these questions, they will be well used to it, I asked some daft stuff at DS's induction morning (he was one of very few who hadn't been in the nursery class and I was fairly clueless)

We have 3 of everything and manage fine. One being washed, one being worn, one ready for the next day. ( I don't always find she needs clean uniform EVERY day, where possible, we get 2 days out if it ) Blush

I have five of everythings and I do have a tumble dryer, (I just like to be able to put out clean clothes each day and I tend to do a mountain of laundry once or maybe twice a week)
I would say that proper school shoes (with velcro fastening so they can get them on and off themselves) is absolutely fine, but equally sensible trainer type shoes would be fine too.
Don't buy a new coat, use the one you have. If the uniform includes joggers then it doesn't sound like a school that is going to be bothered about coat colour. (I don't mean that in a "Urgh Joggers!" way)

Thanks for the responses. Based on what my DS's nursery clothing is like at the end of the day, perhaps 5 of each might not be a bad idea as I hate doing laundry. The uniform is navy and my DS likes to wipe his hands on the clothes as much as possible so I suspect there could be a yoghurty mess left every day!
