we moved in altrincham cheshire in january. my daughter got admission in year 5 just half a mile away ( it wasnt a first catchment) . when we were moving there i was informed that this is the only school which has a place. it has an outstanding ofsted. another child in year 2 got admission 2 miles away in the area which is socially disadvantaged. i wasnt willing to get him admission there as i didnt like the environment but no alternate. later on wen my daughter started school i went to see the head teacher of the school with first catchment n he said he had a place. it was surprising trafford council didnt mention this school.as she was already going so i didnt change her school. but im concerned abt my year 2 son who us getting v abusive n learning bad languages. it takes me 2 hours to do pick n drop service of kids. head teacher if tge schhol of my year 5 kud assured last time that my son could get admission in year 3 as schhool can take more tgan 30 kids in one class. but niw i ve applued for in year transfer he says there r already 30 children in class n ive to go for appeal.trafford council admission officer says that there are already kids on waiting list for this school and the other schools which i had put on the form. now im confused if more than 30 kids can be taken how they r priortized. in such scenario how do they priortize the waiting list. i made an appeal in many schools during start of the school but appeals were unheard. im so upset. anyone has ever experienced this?

I live in altrincham too - oversubscription criteria is as follows:

  1. Looked after children
  2. Catchment with sibling
  3. Catchment
  4. Out of catchment with sibling
  5. Out of catchment

30 is the limit in infant classes, 2 years on we are still wiating for a place at our catchment school, we gave up a long time ago on Trafford!

i fall in no 3 and no 4. in which year ur child was wen u applied? both the head teachers told me that they can take in year 3 more than 30. now it doesnt seem to be a case. ....really hating this system. u can alwaz get admission in one if the worst schools but not in average or good school

The class size limit of 30 children per teacher no longer applies in Y3 but the school is still supposed to stick to the admission number. Also if they are holding a waiting list they must put it in order using the admission criteria. If a place becomes available it is offered to whoever is at the head of the list.

You are in category 4. You can't be in two categories so you are in the highest category for which you qualify. That means you are behind anyone on the waiting list who is in catchment.

An appeal doesn't have to follow the admission criteria. They could decide to admit your child even though there are already 30 children in the class and even if you are a long way down the waiting list. It would all be about whether or not you could make a good enough case that your child should be admitted.

thanx v much for detailed answer. in my application i wrote down name of 4 schools. 1st school falls in category 4 i.e. out of catchment with sibling. second school is in category 3 which is just catchment. and the rest 2 schools fall in category 5. now any1 can advise me how can i put my case stronger? as i mentioned my whole situation .one of the child is always picked up n dropped late from school. even i can do this pick n drop too but my son school is im not satisfied with. he is just learning abrupt rude behaviour.

To strengthen your case you need to come up with reasons your son's education will suffer if he is not admitted to this school. Look for things offered by this school that are missing from the current school and which would be of particular benefit to him. For example, if your son is musically talented and this school offers more musical activities than his current school you should bring that up.
