"Famous scientist or invention" - simple dress-up ideas urgently needed!

Setting aside the fact that I feel like throttling the person who thought it was a great idea to have another dress-up day during the dog days of the summer term, when everyone's nerves are already frazzled ...

Next Friday is "come as your favourite scientist or invention". Yes, that's invention not inventor!

Any quick & simple ideas for a Year 6 girl who does still like dressing up but doesn't want to be teased by those who don't.

AND

Easy suggestions for turning her little sister into an aeroplane also appreciated Hmm

There must be some female scientists - I forget their names, hang on..,

TheWoollybacksWife · 09/07/2013 08:21

Perhaps she could use Rosalind Franklin as her inspiration.

Ideas for dressing up as an aeroplane may require some more thought and another cup of tea Grin

Forgetfulmog · 09/07/2013 08:22

list here

I had no idea there were so many female scientists! Why is this not taught in schools Confused

LillyofWinchester · 09/07/2013 08:29

How about going as a wheel? She could wear a tyre round her waist.

TeaAndCakeOrDeath · 09/07/2013 08:30

Marie Curie? Long black dress, hair in a bun, conical flask (a couple of quid on [[http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=science+prop&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR10.TRC0.A0.Xconical+flask.TRS0&_nkw=conical+flask&_sacat=0 ebay?)

Or any of these women -

  • Agamede (12th century BCE), (possibly mythical) physician in Ancient Greece
  • Aglaonike (2nd century BCE), the first woman astronomer in Ancient Greece
  • Agnodike (4th century BCE), the first woman physician to practice legally in Athens
  • Cleopatra the Alchemist - identity is unclear, but her book, The Chrysopoeia of Cleopatra, is first recorded as existing in the 2nd century A.D./C.E. in Alexandria.
  • Diotima of Mantinea (4th century BCE), philosopher and scientist, ancient Greece

Wearing a costume like toga

For the aeroplane, if you have a large, stiff piece of cardboard, cut out a wing shape and make some shoulder straps (string or wool would probably work) and wear the wings back pack style. If you were feeling really ambitious, you could also make a tail fin to stick out the back and a cockpit mask or helmet.

When my dd2 had to dress as a scientist she went as Dian Fossey (zoologist who studied gorillas): she had a denim shirt, combat trousers, hair in plaits, binoculars (made from toilet roll tubes), and a cuddly gorilla.

Dd1 was Florence Nightingale - Not everyone thinks of her as a scientist, but she did some fascinating work studying infections and developing new ways of representing them statistically- she basically invented the pie chart.

Periwinkle007 · 09/07/2013 10:06

outdoor gear and say she is a geologist.

DeWe · 09/07/2013 10:09

Ruth Lawrence-if a mathematician will do.
Put on a black skirt and white blouse with a black ribbon at the neck (sub fusc) and she can be going up to Oxford aged 12...

HRHwheezing · 09/07/2013 10:10

What about Dior as the inventor of the " new look" , a pretty skirt and top!

EdwiniasRevenge · 09/07/2013 10:11

Go as an iPhone made out of a sandwich board style costume.

slug · 09/07/2013 10:38

Ada Lovelace? anything vaguely Victorian looking would do. Or how about Grace Hopper? A nod at a naval uniform shouldn't be too hard.

NoComet · 09/07/2013 10:44

The inventor of the computer mouse has just died, I'm sure there is comic milage in a mouse x technology costume.

MonParapluie · 09/07/2013 10:48

Dress as a lightbulb (famous invention) ? lightbulb

airplane

HarumScarum · 09/07/2013 11:56

How about The Wheel, possibly the most important invention of all time. You will need some large pieces of card, some brown/black paint and some thick ribbon or tape of some kind. Cut two big wheels, paint, attach at sides/over shoulders with tape or ribbon and dress her in black/grey/brown leggings/shorts and T shirt underneath. She can take the wheel off when she gets sick of it and be comfortable.

Katybabes · 09/07/2013 13:01

We had a similar event last term - but after deliberation the school added 'innovator' to the list as well. Our boys dressed up as Steven Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg (with the assistance of name badges with logos on them).

This term they've got to dress up as celebrities for an end of term School Association event - I'm totally out of ideas for that one!

AuntieStella · 09/07/2013 13:03

Famous invention? How about a fabric launch as Lycra, spandex or nylon?

cocoplops · 09/07/2013 13:12

Dress up as an iphone or ipad? Make a sort of black tabard and decorate with 'apps'. The tech modern aspect might go go down well with those who think dress up is passe, but she'd still get to dress up as something.

Or an iphone and make some sort of comedy glasses out of cardboard decorated with phones on them ('eye' phone??! Geddit? Well....maybe not!). Or just a patch on your eye and go as an eye-pad/ipad. I'll get back to the day job now....

cocoplops · 09/07/2013 13:15

Just looked on pinterest and aeroplane dress up here....

ohhappyday.com/2012/10/airplane-costume/

And they have lots of ipad costumes too, sort of thing I was thinking of.

AChickenCalledKorma · 09/07/2013 18:30

You are all stars.thanks for great ideas. DD1 loves the idea of being Dian FosSEy. She frequently looks like she's just emerged from the jungle anyway and she has a cuddly baboon which has gracefully agreed to play the part of a mountain gorilla :-)
