Year R report nonsense

Why when my DD only scored a 2 on all 17 categories does her teacher write a load of glowing waffle in her report. I would't mind so much but when I haven't been working, during the last year, I've been helping out at school. Surely if she was performing so poorly her teacher could have mentioned it. I thought we were friends!!
Instead of giving us proper guidance all the feedback we've had over the last year is that she is funny and makes them laugh. I feel incredibly let down by the teachers on so many levels as cant even think how to address this with them!

But surely if she was scoring 3's she would be exceeding the Early Learning Goals? So your Dd is where she should be at the end of reception?

2 is the expected level for children in reception, and if you read what the goals are you will see that they are set at quite a high standard. Under the old EYFS 2 would have been poor but under the new standards 1 is underachieving, 2 is expected and 3 is exceeding. Your DD is not performing poorly at all.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 08/07/2013 21:13

What does a 2 mean then? We're getting reception reports this week. Wasn't expecting marks out of 10..

GwendolineMaryLacey · 08/07/2013 21:14

X post. Thanks.

cookieface · 08/07/2013 21:18

Her scores are all 2s.... According to what I have read at the start of year R they are expected to be scoring 3s and 6s at the end of year R (8 or 9 if they are doing better)......

because 2 is the expected level Hmm your child has done very well

spanieleyes · 08/07/2013 21:20

Those scores are through the OLD EYFS ( which was out of a maximum of 9) The new "scores" are 1/2 or 3 when 1 is below expectations, 2 is meeting expectations and 3 is above. So all 2's IS worth a glowing report!

Periwinkle007 · 08/07/2013 21:22

as I understand it
1 emerging
2 expected
3 exceeding

so we would all hope to get 2 in each of the 17 categories and be overjoyed with a 3 in something.

Cookieface - they only have 1 2 or 3 now. on the old system (last year) they were hoped to get between 3/4 and 6 I think and 7/8/9 were above what was expected (could have the dividers wrong there). now they are hoped to get 2s.

there is some complicated other bit about a GLD I think it is - a good level of development which is 2s in most things but allowed to be 1s in some others specific categories. Mrz or someone knows the details.

so a 2 in everything is great.

Jaffalemon · 08/07/2013 21:22

Your DD is doing really well.

Mrz has posted a brilliant link on the other thread on here. Have a look through and you will be very happy!

mrz · 08/07/2013 21:23

That was the old profile with 13 "categories" score out of 117

The new profile has 17 ELGs

1= emerging level
2=expected level
3= exceeding level

AbbyR1973 · 08/07/2013 21:24

OP what you have read is the old EYFS profile.
The new profile came in this year and as others have said is reported as emerging (1), expected (2) and exceeding (3). The total maximum points is now 17x3 = 51. If your DD got 2 points in each area it means she is achieving the expected level in all areas. A total of 34 points (the average was 32 points I believe in the pilot.)

DrownedGirl · 08/07/2013 21:28

This is the new framework
They can score 1-3 for each heading

:0) Thank you ladies I had no idea the scoring had changed since last year. Will de-puff the eyes and rewrap teachers presents. Just wish the school had explained the scoring system otherwise I wouldn't got myself so wound up. Phew.

Ignore the numbers, the comments are the lovely bit to read.

I HATE HATE HATE with a passion how the number crunching and report writing is taking the joy out of teaching individual children and encouraging themto develop in their own time and how the system causes worry to Mums like the OP who now think maybe their child is not progressing.

In some countries this age group would still be in nursery, having fun not being forced into boxes.

OP is she enjoying her school life? Has she made friends & discovered a love of books or creative stuff? The rest will come, please don't worry about the numbers.

It sounds like your lovely daughter is a joy to teach and full of character, far more important.

ExitPursuedByABear · 08/07/2013 21:32

Is it not on the reverse of the report?

Love 'emerging'
