Hello, can you help an indecisive mother new to mn? Smile
My family and I (DH & DS) are relocating to SW London next year. We need a short direct rail commute into Waterloo (20-30mins) but also want quick acceas to the west, good schools within walking or short drive and plenty to entertain a very active 20month yo. We narrowed our search down to three areas; Richmond, Wimbledon, Wandsworth/Clapham area.
The real question is that considering we have not registered for any independent schools yet, what are the chances of getting a place and which would suit a down to earth, sporty family?
I am hoping to look around the schools come September so are there any you would recommend? I am quite happy to look at state schools but I hear it can be harder to get what you want because of the small catchment areas?

I only know Richmond and areas (Kew, Barnes, East Sheen, Twickenham). All the state primaries are excellent. If you go privately there are some very good prep schools in the area. Kew College is excellent. Also the Unicorn but heard it's difficult to get into. Boys only - King's House in Richmond, The Mall in Twickeham.

People say you don't have to go privately in these areas as the state schools are so good. This is true but the competition is extremely fierce when trying for secondary schools (private and grammar ones) and the tutoring starts VERY early so be warned! The Kew College children I know all got into extremely selective secondaries this year due mostly to the school's (and child's) effort and not the parents.

Are you thinking of private schools?

Thanks Castles, all sounds very competitive. Yes Wobbly, private are a consideration thinking co-ed though to begin with.

Wimbledon gets you to Waterloo in 15 mins . Quite a few private schools to choose from but depends on age and sex on your children and also where you see them for secondary. Lots for children , polka theatre, Wimbledon theatre, lots of parks and cafes.

Down to earth, sporty family... go and visit Willington in Wimbledon town centre just behind the library.
