How many school uniform items do I need?

We're just starting to look at getting the school uniform, but don't know how many of each item we will need! (I don't want to be washing every night!!)

The uniform is:

Summer dress
Winter dress
Polo top
jumper
cardigan
Trousers (DD doesn't like trousers though!)

Any advice appreciated!

what about p.e kit do you not need that

mumofapirate · 02/07/2013 19:08

my ds had 3 trousers, 3 polos and 3 jumpers last year but because im lazy (and got a good deal) he now has 5 trouserz, 7 shirts, 2 offical school jumpers and 2 plain jumpers. This means I only have to wash at weekends Grin

personally I would prob get 2 dresses, 2 skirts, 2 cardis 3 polo shirts etc this way you can always put her in trousers if there isn't a skirt clean.

Onlyconnect · 02/07/2013 19:11

I would get as much as you can afford without being ridiculous. Just so there's no pressure if you don't have time to wash it one weekend or if it comes home dirty twice in a row.

Loads of socks - goodness knows where they go
Loads of shirts - they get stained very easily. Not just little stains, great big enormous stains that even the most laid-back mother would declare unwearable.

noramum · 02/07/2013 20:24

I started with 3 of each but upgraded to 5 of each very soon. You could see lunch remains, paint, crayons and mud on the clothes everyday, I got fed up with permanent washing.

DD also hates trousers, I didn't bother last winter as one actually still had the label on when she outgrew it, never worn. I just got her thermal tights and warm boots, that seemed to do the trick.

OnTheNingNangNong · 02/07/2013 20:26

I have 6 polo shirts two jumpers, , two trousers and one pair of shorts for DS. I would have similar if I had a DD but would have skirts instead of trousers as your DD isn't keen on them.

Go for what you imagined plus two. You always need more than you imagine and you don't want to be ironing at midnight!

TinaSurrey · 03/07/2013 05:32

I wouldn't get summer dresses as if its warm & sunny in Sept it will only be for a few weeks. Any summer dresses you buy to fit then would be outgrown by next summer.

When you say winter dress - do you mean like a pinafore that the polo top goes underneath?

If so I would buy 5 winter dresses, 5 short sleeved polo tops, 5 cardigans, 5 pairs of tights, one pack of socks. Plus one of each PE kit.

If its hot in Sept she wears the short sleeve polo under the pinafore with socks. When its cold add cardi and swap socks for tights. I would buy summer dresses in May next year.

noramum · 03/07/2013 07:18

Tina, it depends on the school. My friend's DD attends a school where Summer dresses are mandatory from Summer term onwards and the first half of Autumn term unless it is less then 10 degrees. Crazy but my friend was told off by the "Gate police" when her girl came in skirt and polo top when her dad forgot to collect the dresses from the ironing.

When my DD started I got two dresses cheap for hot days and I was glad as we suddenly got a heat wave end of September and the pinofortes were just too hot. I bought big, they still fitted in Spring.

TheYamiOfYawn · 03/07/2013 19:56

5 polo shirts, 3 summer dresses a size too big, 5 pairs of tights (more if you want enough for the year - 2 will get holes in) and between 2 and 4 winter bottoms, eg 2 winter dresses and 1 pair of trousers. At least 3 cardigans - they will get filthy with ink on the cuffs and mud on the back, and will take at least a day to dry once they've been washed.

More socks than you can imagine.

intheshed · 03/07/2013 20:26

DD now has 5 polo shirts, 3 winter dresses and 3 summer dresses.

We only bought one summer dress in Sept, but actually she is still wearing it now! She hasn't really grown outwards, just upwards Grin

mikkii · 03/07/2013 20:38

I bought 3 pinafores and 2 skirts. I also bought 2 pairs of trousers.

I only had 3 short sleeve shirts and 2 long, but had to get more when she objected to short sleeves in the snow!

One jumper, one cardigan

3 summer dresses, but last week she went through those in 4 days and had to wear one from last year!

mikkii · 03/07/2013 20:39

Oh, and if there is a choice, grey socks and tights look decent longer than white ones!

nextphase · 03/07/2013 21:29

I've just bought for DS:
1 set of PE kit
6 white shirts (came in packs of 2!)
Topped the trousers up to 5. Going to keep my eyes open for cotton ones and get some more then. He's been wearing grey trousers to preschool 2 days a week.
3 school jumpers - they have to be logo'd I was going to get 5 til we saw the price. Will find some plain ones for emergencies when I have the actual one in my hands to match.
2 ties (he's 4!)

I only iron once a week!

Periwinkle007 · 03/07/2013 21:37

Is the polo top to go under the winter dress/pinafore? otherwise if she doesn't like trousers then I can't see why you would need it and you shouldn't need both jumper and cardigan IMO.

We have managed the reception year with 1 pinafore and 1 skirt, 5 blouses, 1 cardigan, 2 summer dresses (she wears the first one for as many days as I can get away with until she hopefully reaches end of Wednesday. I have only had to wash one during the week once since Easter)

She has 5 pairs of knee socks for the winter, 5 pairs of white socks for the summer, 5 pairs of tights and 2 pairs of over the knee socks which we found handy for that in between weather either side of proper winter.

Can someone recommend skirts for tall skinny girls? Or do I just have to put a tuck in? Bought some Tesco 4-5s and by mistake they don't have adjustable waist and just fall off DD. Have got her pinafores too and maybe these are better for her, but thought she might like to wear a skirt sometimes.

Found that the 4-5 polo shirts are plenty big enough. Not sure we could cope with one cardigan/jumper. DS has 3 jumpers and this is about right for him as he gets messy eg paint/drops dinner on them. DD will have a mix of DS's hand me downs/a friend's hand me downs and some new. Got to get her socks and PE kit and then we're done I think Smile.

Beamur · 03/07/2013 22:13

I have at least one set of uniform for each day of the week. Everything clean every day.

Periwinkle007 · 03/07/2013 22:18

Sainsburys have adjustable waist skirts, as do Asda. I would have assumed Tesco did too but obviously not.
my daughter is tall and skinny and her new one a few weeks ago was Sainsburys, doesn't bunch too much when pulled in either and the gathering at the back sort of hides it anyway.

freetrait · 03/07/2013 22:32

They probably do, I just picked up the wrong ones Blush. Think I will try Sainsburys, thanks!
