EYFS profile/scores - confused

Hi
Am a bit confused about the changes to the EYFS assessments for Reception. Is there a "score" at the end of the year like there used to be? If so what's the average? or what can one consider to be ok/good/worrying etc? I am new to all of this and it seems to have changed from last September...is that right? Have seen threads in the past about scores of 5's 6 or 8/9 being outstanding. Not clear how this translates under new system.
Also are we as parents entitled to ask to see a copy of the assessment over the 17 areas?
Could anyone enlighten me?

As far as I know there are just three bands - below, at or above the expected level - according the the EY teacher at our school there are very high expectations of what they should be achieving. For example my son who scored all 8 and 9 last year would be at the expected level on the new framework.

Children will now be assessed as being emerging, expected or exceeding against the early learning goals. There is no scoring, instead a best fit judgement is made by the teacher. You should be able to see evidence collected such as in a learning journal but all settings work differently and the requirements in terms of paperwork have also been reduced so what is actually available to see will vary. I keep evidence in a learning journey that parents can access at any time and add comments too if they wish.Your best bet would be discussing with the teacher why they think your child is expected to achieve the elg etc as at the end of the day it is their personal judgement about that child that it is based on.

My DC school are still using the old system and aim to get kids to a 6 by the end of reception year.

Yes I am sure I have told you that before.

They are an academy if that makes any difference.

Not sure if they are planning to use the new EYFS guidelines next year.

They were planning to start using the new one from Feb this year but decided against it.

Sorry mrz did not mean to come across as snippy Blush

mrz · 25/06/2013 19:48

In the new profile there are a possible 51 profile points

Emerging =1point
Expected=2 points
Exceeding =3 points

a good level of development is 32 points

mrz · 25/06/2013 19:50

you didn't come across as snippy simpson I'm just shocked

simpson · 25/06/2013 19:53

Not sure why they did not change. I am wondering if it is because they are very free to give out the EYFS scores nos 1-9 a lot (to parents) and if they switched parents would still be asking for them.

Not making excuses, just wondering myself really. And since DD is my youngest I guess I won't know if they do use the new guidelines next school year or not Smile

Periwinkle007 · 25/06/2013 19:56

I am quite intrigued to know what info we will get in our reports, whether we just get blurb or whether they say emerging, expected, exceeding or whether we get an overall score or what?

Will I get something similar at the end of preschool for my other daughter or is it just at the end of reception?

Pozzled · 25/06/2013 20:00

I thought the new framework was statutory, and schools had to use it to report to parents.

As I understand it, parents should be told if their child is emerging/expected/exceeding for each of the ELGs, and should also be told about their child's individual 'characteristics of learning' (Still not sure what that means though!)

simpson · 25/06/2013 20:01

I was told by DD's reception teacher that her end of school year report is very similar to her end of nursery report (last year) ie mainly picture based with a guess a bit of blurb about each subject.

Her EYFS scores will be reported (but I know them and they have not changed since the end of nursery except for numeracy based ones) but no NC levels will be in it.

mrz · 25/06/2013 20:14

Academies have to follow the new EYFS Pozzled which is why I am shocked

paz1 · 25/06/2013 22:06

Thanks for all the info everyone. Much clearer now. DD's teacher also mentioned similar thing to what fuzzymum says: that it was much harder for them to get an exceeding this year than before. Sounds as if the bar has been raised and criteria have changed. anyway thanks all. much clearer now

If a child was awarded 9 last year that would be exceeding ...

christinarossetti · 26/06/2013 07:55

Is the new framework designed to be used as a summative assessment at the end of foundation stage as the other one was, or should/can schools be telling parents their child's 'levels' as they go along?

mrz · 26/06/2013 17:06

As a summative assessment at the end of the reception year (guidance says it must not be used as they go along)

simpson · 26/06/2013 17:52

Oops, another thing my DC school do wrong then, at each parents eve the parents have been told where their child is ie they started reception on a 4 and by Christmas they might be a 5 and by Easter a 6.

Then we have another parents eve in the next week or 2 and parents will be told what level their child is at (although reports will be out by then and I assume levels are in it).
