Do schools keep the KS1 SATS assessments?

From what I have read (please correct me if I am wrong Smile) KS1 SATS are made up from teacher assessments and also some kind of 'test' papers marked by the teacher?.

What I was wondering is do the school keep the 'test' papers in the pupils files or do they simply take a note of the SATS results?.

What is the writing part of KS1 SATS made up of? Is it a passage to read and then questions and answers? or is it creative writing? or a mixture of both?.....sorry just curious.

I am still slightly miffed about my DS's SATS results, granted he is now coming towards the end of YR3 but I was going back through his YR2 work earlier and there was an English assessment in there which was marked as a lvl 1b/c, he also produced very little written work during that year. As mentioned above he is at the end of YR3 and his writing was still a level 1b as of May this year.

I really do not want to sound like I am doubting my DS's abilities BUT knowing how he reacts to this type of work and knowing what he struggles with, I just have a re-occuring niggling feeling (which I just can not shake!) that the SATS results of 2b weren't a true reflection of his levels in YR2.

I'm asking this question because I have applied for a statutory assessment for my DS, and the LA will take into account my DS's SATS results which are pretty impressive for a DC who still can't spell YR1 HFW, or string together a creative sentence without 1-1 help. Confused Now I would like to believe that he pulled it out the bag big time when he needed too rather than somebody was being a bit naughty.

Gawd I am rambling!! Will there be proof other than his school work?

The level you are given at the end of KS1 is based mainly on teacher assessment. To be given any level the child needs to have sufficient volume of work to indicate that they are consistently working at that level.

If you have all his class work and it?s not of the standard that he was assessed at, I think it would be reasonable to ask on what basis his assessment was made.
I don?t know what schools do with actual SATS but tbh one piece of spectactular work would not be enough to influence his overall level.

We have always kept our old SATs papers, and they've moved up the school with the children. This is the first year where it's not happened.

I actually quite liked looking through them (I'm in year 3) if I really wasn't sure about a child.

We shred them

Ours go in child's hanging file in office, along with assessment books that come out 3 times a year for assessed writing to go in.

We assess continually and only use the tests as one piece of evidence to support teacher assessment as such they carry no more weight than any other work produced in the year.

I agree.

Thanks everyone.

Feenie did you agree that I was rambling? Grin.

Most of his work books from YR2 consist of date/title and 3 very short sentences max......and plenty of not so nice comments from his very frustrated CT. There is probably 4 correct spellings per piece of work, apart from that one piece of work which has been marked as a 1b/c. Hmm maybe I should forward a few copies of work from his books to back up the SA request...

I think feenie was agreeing with me about the status of the tests
