Please tell me about break times in your school

DD came home today and said that the school day is being reorganised a bit. Currently morning break is 20 minutes, lunch is 1 hour and afternoon break is 10 minutes.

From Monday the morning break will be 15 minutes, lunch is being brought forward to an earlier time and the afternoon break will no longer be. Instead, there will be an afternoon assembly.

All of this information is coming via the children who have been informed by the teachers. So far no official communication has come from the school.

Please tell me how your school's day is organised? How can the children work well in the afternoon without a break?

Sounds like they think they need a bit more teaching time, or have to fit in more collective worship than they have been doing.

Most infant classes get an afternoon break, IME, but few junior classes do. It's not that long without a 'break'. How old is DS?

Judyandherdreamofhorses · 22/06/2013 01:49

Parents wouldn't normally be consulted about this sort of thing, or informed in advance. It doesn't affect them. You do need to be consulted, in advance, about changes to school start and end times.

MirandaWest · 22/06/2013 01:59

At DCs school everyone has morning break for about 15 minutes (10:30-10:45)
Then lunch from 12:00-1:00
Infants have afternoon break from 2:30-2:45. Juniors don't have one.
School finishes at 3:20

pollywollydoodle · 22/06/2013 02:07

no afternoon break from Y3. dd seems to manage ok

SavoyCabbage · 22/06/2013 04:46

It must be ten years since I came across a KS2 class that had an afternoon break.

Jinty64 · 22/06/2013 06:56

We have a morning break from 10:40 - 11:00, lunch from 12:30 - 13:30 and school finishes at 14:45 for infants and 15:15 for juniors. No afternoon break for anyone.

Parents would need to be informed of lunch time changes for children going home.

mrz · 22/06/2013 07:51

We have morning & afternoon breaks of 15 mins infants and juniors

RustyBear · 22/06/2013 08:16

Judy - since 2011 schools don't have to consult parents and other stakeholders in advance about changes to the start/end of the school day. It's still advised that they do so, at least half a term in advance, but the 'requirement' has gone.

Tobagostreet · 22/06/2013 08:23

09:00 start

10:30 - 15 min morning break

12:00 - 1 hour lunch

15:00 - school ends

No afternoon break, and no harm from not having one.

gorionine · 22/06/2013 08:23

In our school
For KS1: 15 minutes in the morning, 1h10 minutes at lunch and another 15 minutes in the afternoon

For KS2: 15 minutes in the morning, 1h at lunch time. In the past they also had a break in the afternoon but were finishing the day a bit later which was most impractical when parents had another child still in KS1 too.

in scotland we have never had an afternoon break why do they need an afternoon break are the hours different? my ds goes to school 9.05-3.05 has a 20 min morn break and 1 hour lunch break

ShadeofViolet · 22/06/2013 08:31

In our school

KS1 - 15 mins in the morning, 1hr15 at lunch and 10 mins in the afternoon.

KS2 - Same except 1 hr at lunch (but they eat faster so probably get the same playground time).

I wouldn't expect to be consulted or even told if the times change, it has nothing to do with me really.

ilovepowerhoop · 22/06/2013 08:32

school start 8.55am
morning break 10.30-10.45
lunch 12.10-13.00
school finishes 3pm

same times for P1 to P7, no afternoon break

Personally, I'd much rather both key stages had a playtime in the afternoon, and school finished 15 minutes later.

I think the social aspects of playtime are important and woefully overlooked in our current educational system.

School day starts at 8.50
Everyone has a 15 minute morning break.
KS1 get 55 mins at lunch
KS1 get 45 mins at lunch
No-one has an afternoon break
DAy ends at 3.

hels71 · 22/06/2013 08:49

That says KS2 get 45 mins......

mrz · 22/06/2013 08:49

I thought the break was to give pupils a chance to visit the loo between lessons more than as a social occasion.

daftdame · 22/06/2013 09:02

Not just socialising and loo time, there is plenty of physical activity too.

All good in my opinion, nothing worse than spending all afternoon in a hot classroom without having the chance to stretch the old legs a bit. Very important for a lot of children I would imagine.

AuntieStella · 22/06/2013 09:06

I'll check on timetables downstairs for timings, but no afternoon break after KS1.

4LittleBubbles · 22/06/2013 09:11

Infant and Juniors have afternoon break here.
Morning; 10:10-10:30
Lunch; 12:15-1:15
Afternoon; 2:20-2:30
Infants finishes at 3:15, juniors at 3:30. (Juniors is across the road so gives parents some time to get over even if their infant child is out late.)

simpson · 22/06/2013 09:17

No afternoon break for infants or juniors (only introduced this year).

They used to come back from lunch at 1.00 and have a break at 2.00 which seemed a bit silly.

Now lunch goes on till 1.15 and no afternoon break (school finishes at 3.15).

prettydaisies · 22/06/2013 10:19

We start at 8.50. Break is 10-10.15 and lunch is 12.15-1.15. No scheduled afternoon break, but teachers can and do take classes out. Day ends at 3.15.
