Discipline in Key Stage One

What is the norm when it comes to disciplining children in the lower school?

I've just heard a worrying story about children being made to stand up in front of the class and wear red 'traffic light' badges for naughty behaviour as well as having to do 'work' and tidy up while other children get break time. Perhaps I'm just really soft but this sounds a bit victorian to me! I would have though maybe at upper school but not for the little ones.

The schools behaviour policy just states what is / isn't expected of pupils behaviour and doesn't talk at all about punishments.

As a former teacher I'd suggest that any tactic that tries to shame a child into conforming is very bad practice. And won't work for the ones you really have a problem with because they do things for attention in the first place ...

In my dd's KS1 they have a 'traffic light' system in terms of increasing the ante - but none of it is applied in a shaming way. It's just the way it is, and everyone is aware of it from the beginning.

Nor should shaming be used with older ones.

I think it's something like: they all have name stickers, and a big chart on the wall. Their stickers can go on gold or silver for extra good work/behavour, or on blue for 'might want to change that behaviour', or on yellow for 'miss a bit of playtime' or red (very very rarely given) for 'go and join the year below for a bit, and the teacher will speak to your mummy.'

No one has had red in the entire year.

Our behaviour policy does state the consequences of poor behaviour, not just the expectations.

my daughter's reception class have a sort of reward chart. if good or do good work or very kind/helpful etc go on one marker, if naughty, horrible, disobedient etc either go down off that marker or if they weren't on it in the first place go on a different marker to indicate naughtiness. they have a couple of levels of naughtiness I believe. It is then all reset at the end of the day for the start of the next day.
