Understanding the world (reception)

Ds2 starts school in September and we have been given a form to fill in on his progress to date, likes/dislikes etc. There is a section on his 'understanding of the world'. Can anyone tell me what kind of thing is covered by this - I don't want to waffle on about irrelevant stuff!

Thanks

Bit rubbish of them not to explain this to you!

Basically - interest in/understanding of the natural world
How things work
Technology
Different cultures

It could be quite wide though - if he has a particular interest in frogs/pyramids/what happens when you flush the toilet/building things/been on holiday abroad/went to a wedding/using a camera etc

In EYFS terms it's their local environment see here earlyyearsmatters.co.uk/index.php/knowledge-and-understanding-of-the-world-kuw/

Thank you both. Tbf, they may have explained but dh was there, not me, and he's now working so I don't want to disturb him. I think I pretty much knew this but have got stuck on this one because ds2 is so different from how ds1 was at this age. Ds1 was a font of knowledge about, among other things, dinosaurs, Egyptians and Romans, marine life etc etc. I know I shouldn't compare, but ds2 doesn't seem to share his brother's interest in the world and would dance around to 'Suessical the Musical' all day if we let him Hmm.

He is, of course, wonderful in his own way, but I'm just not sure what to put on the form.

Does he have an interest in technology?

lecce · 18/06/2013 21:08

Not especially. He likes his Vtech tablet every now and then, and he can work the laptop for Youtube videos of am-dram performances of Suessical Hmm. He likes painting, baking, singing, dancing, the occasional bit of building-brick games, his soft-toys.

Children talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members. They know that other children don?t always enjoy the same things, and are sensitive to this. They know about similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among families, communities and traditions.

Children know about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things.
They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another. They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about
changes.

Children recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools. They select and use technology for particular purposes.

can he switch on the TV or DVD player, play a CD, use a remote control toy, answer the phone ... using technology

DD in reception now had to make a scrapbook over the summer holidays about what she did, where she went etc...

The reception class I have a placement in (not my DC school) are learning about different materials and what they are used for ie plastic, fabric, paper etc...

DD is lucky to have a playing field with a small pond and allotment so has been taken out and has learnt about mini beasts, she has had a tour of the school (in small groups) and been asked to point out items of technology etc.

She has also had a farm visit the school and got to feed/stroke pigs, ponies, goats, chickens etc...
