DH is a secondary maths teacher, and is also doing preliminary research for his PhD.
He's found a recent study of 125 children, not in anyway 'selected' (apart from being sourced from state, rather than private, primaries) Stanford University was commissioned by the UK DfE to carry out the study, which ran for six years, and followed the cohort through their entire maths primary schooling.
The study showed that children taught using the cuisenaire method were far in advance of their 'traditionally schooled' peers - in fact, these ordinary children were two full years ahead of their peers by the end of primary school.

The study finished in 2010, the report was duly submitted to the DfE, the new government came in, and the report was left to die.
Since DH has begun his research, I am frequently rendered aghast at the detailed studies which have been carried out by educational researchers- and replicated time and again - in all areas of education, and which never make it into the public domain, or the classroom.
What a waste.
