Reception induction - what to expect?

my DS is starting reception in sept; I acccepted his place online (we live in London) and had thought that by now I'd have heard something from the school in terms of new kids visiting to before they start. Have it in my mind that this is the norm, but perhaps I'm wrong? Wondered if others have had any contact from schools yet?

My dgs is in a little school where his nursery class is in the same room as Reception so he will just cross the floor from pastel coloured tables to 'brights' :)
They are all very excited about becoming 'bright' when they join 'Acepshun'

Also in London. Our school have been in touch to arrange a teacher visit at home and a school induction visit which will happen in mid June. I would give the school a call and ask if they do inductions.

thegreylady · 02/06/2013 21:24

They do have an induction day for the new ones though-usually in early July I think.

Thanks a lot, I will call them, just wanted to check first that inductons are the norm before asking the school. One primary in my area has put up notices in the local park advertising a series of picnics for sept starters, which also sounded a lovely way for the kids and parents to meet in an informal setting. Anyhow will call our school tomorrow.
Cheers!

My ds is starting a small school in Sept ( intake 10 in reception ). He goes to big school every Friday afternoon and has done since the start of the summer term for induction and loves it. ( think its only possible in this school because of the small numbers though ).

Yes, call the school and see what they have in place. At our school there is a meeting for parents and the kids get taken into the reception classroom to meet the teacher and new pals if they aren't coming from the school nursery (most do but normally a handful come from outside).

Ours have a teddy bears picnic day in school for a full day at the end of July and an individual meeting for new parents with the teacher but haven't had anything formal come out about it yet. Most are already doing at least some sessions in the nursery attached to reception however.

We are still waiting to hear from our school too.

sandyposy · 04/06/2013 06:52

Thought I would update - called school and left a message, they replied saying they'd be writing to us. And there are dates for various meetings/ days when the kids visit the school on their website too. So all is fine I think, many thanks for your replies

Ds's induction is on Wednesday and there's a meeting for parents that evening. Ds can't wait!

abuhamzamouse · 04/06/2013 08:32

I emailed the school a while back and they said they would be in touch about induction etc. I think I need to chase them.

Ollie let is know how it goes.

Hi sandyposy:

First of all I'd suggest contacting the school (by phone or e-mail) - just go to their website and look for 'contact us' or 'about our school' options. I'm sure they will be planning something - but as usual they know what they're doing and don't always feel particularly obliged to explain that to you.

Another possibility is to check the 'Dates for your Diary' page or newsletters and see if the calendar lists any parent meetings coming up.

I had to ring myself because we were planning a holiday in July and I vaguely new there would be visit days, but didn't know when. The secretary was very understanding - admitted she wouldn't know what dates precisely but could say what weeks would be parent meetings & child visit to Class R with other pupils - and helped us out.

HTH

I will do abuhamzamouse. Ds is ridiculously excited! He's most looking forward to finding out where the toilets are apparently... and plans to say, 'hello Miss X, nice to meet you' lol, sucking up already!
