Amazing end-of-year present for a primary school teacher

We are looking for inspiration for DD's class teacher, who is unanimously seen as a star. Collective gift, we will raise lots of money. We don't want to give vouchers. What do teachers want?

Wow. OTT!! Competitive present giving is a new one on me. Teachers have to declare any expensive gifts they receive. I'm sure something of less value but more sentiment will be just as appreciated

BOF · 31/05/2013 20:02

Yes- why don't you just sent a card saying that you really appreciate the cultural dimension to her teaching? Don't be worried about sounding like a knob; I'm sure she knows all the parents well enough by now.

lissieloo · 31/05/2013 20:04

Do you buy for the TAs too?

wordfactory · 31/05/2013 20:13

bob if all the parents club in together, you can raise enought cash for a really decent gift for teachers.

The class rep always organised this at my DC's primary school. 20 kids in a class. £25 per family.

mrz · 31/05/2013 20:15
Shock
mrz · 31/05/2013 20:16

As a teacher I would be mortified wordfactory

mrz · 31/05/2013 20:17

obviously very kind and thoughtful but unnecessary

lissieloo · 31/05/2013 20:17

£25? blimey, I baked ds's teacher and the lovely TA who does one-to-one with him, a cake. and bought them a bottle of wine.

Numberlock · 31/05/2013 20:19

Ha ha I wish I'd be one of those parents just to see your face when you asked me for my £25 contribution.

What a load of bollocks.

lissieloo · 31/05/2013 20:19

mrz, my bf's dw is a teacher and won't accept anything she feels is too extravagant. As she says, its not fair on the less wealthy families.

wordfactory · 31/05/2013 20:19

To be fair, you give £25 at the start of the year, and from the kitty comes a class Christmas card and gift, ditto Easter. So not the full amount left for the summer iyswim.

To be fair I'd be giving £0.00 at the start of the year.

Arisbottle · 31/05/2013 20:23

I would be mortified to receive an expensive present.

I love getting letters and cards.

bobthebear · 31/05/2013 20:24

£25 per family. Shock Seriously??? I agree with DebsMorgan, expensive gifts from parents is embarrassing.

bobthebear · 31/05/2013 20:24

And Easter gifts? Bonkers

mrz · 31/05/2013 20:26

I'm pleased I'm not alone

DewDr0p · 31/05/2013 20:26

Shock at the £25 donation! And I say that as someone who does like to buy a little gift for the teacher and TAs.

Fwiw my Mum was a teacher and her favourite presents were the homemade cards and little things she knew the child had chosen themselves. Me and my siblings loved the Maltesers Grin

I don't think it's that, TSC, to be fair- it's just that if you are surrounded by all these wealthy parents and teachers, it's incredibly difficult to get your bragging fix in real life. Mumsnet plugs that gap.

trinity0097 · 31/05/2013 20:35

If parents decide to club together I would much prefer to receive vouchers as then I can spend them on something that I need, that may be something mundane!

I hate receiving wine as I don't drink, please do check that your teacher is not tee total before giving alcohol! I now have 2 bottles of champagne in my office thanks to the kind generosity of parents who didn't know I don't drink!

The most thoughtful present I had was a leaving one where every child put in a pound and got me a nice bunch of flowers.

GW297 · 31/05/2013 20:45

Flowers from an actual florist make a great gift.

WipsGlitter · 31/05/2013 20:56

I wouldn't mind the clubbing together thing, £25 is a but steep though. But I think the snobby parents (few and far between) at DSs school wouldn't like that as their massive present would be part of a lumped in one.

London trip - no (a) kids to be taken account of might be v stressful for her (b) the rest of her spending money for London might be a stretch for her

PeaceandFUCKINGLove · 31/05/2013 21:16

I don't think I have ever seen a post from Bonsoir where she doesn't mention that -

a) She lives in Paris

b) She is so terribly wealthy and glamorous

Grin

I would give advice on the present, but this post wasn't really about the present was it?! Wink
