Best place to buy school uniform for small, skinny boys?

DS starts in P1 in August - buying trousers is always a challenge at the best of times as he's quite short and skinny.

Any suggestions for the best place to try for trousers and polo shirts etc that are a slimmer fit?

I know it's a while away, but we visited his school today and took a look at the branded school uniform so it's on my mind and distracting me from the actual things I should be doing right now

These are worth a try. They come in longer and shorter lengths with adjustable waist.

ds is very slim , I get his uniform trousers and shorts from next
these in slim fit

he has any shirts, have never found slim fit of them he just wears smaller sizes

Thanks both. I'll take a look. It wouldn't even have occurred to me to look in Next. Are those ones very 'jeans' like?

only in the fact they have pockets on the back like jeans do , otherwise they look like normal school trousers , same material as others

Thanks ggirl.

DS was short and skinny, he's older now and has caught up a bit.

I always used to get M&S or Sainsburys. Both do adjustable waists and both last well.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/05/2013 23:33

DS has always worn trousers two years younger than his age and has to have adjustable waists, he has had these M&S since he started school, started in age 3, now wears age 7 at age 9. He is very skinny. They have also worn really well, never need ironing, always lasted a whole school year in perfect condition, totally recommend them.

I buy DS1's school trousers from Sainsburys - he needed age 3 when he started in reception last year, aged 4.5 - their basic trousers, flat front & adjustable waist, fit him fine and have lasted well enough to be handed on to a friend's child. I bought the same style again for him this year in an age 4. I've heard M&S are also good for skinny boys & have been given a pile of age 6 & 7 M&S trousers from a neighbour's son who is a very similar build to DS1

timtam23 · 30/05/2013 00:13

I also bought polo shirts from Sainsbo's, which are definitely slim fitting, but after a few months DS got stuck in them when trying to take them off as they didn't have side vents at the bottom of side seams - tried Asda ones in the end which were ok (age 3-4) and easier for him to take off by himself

blueberryupsidedown · 30/05/2013 09:07

The Next slim fit are low at the waist and you can see their bum when sitting on the floor. M&S slim fit are better all round, better look, more durable. Don't go for the Asda trousers as they are baggy. I do like the M&S skinkind polos they are very soft and good quality, the size is a bit big so buy a size smaller.

getyourshoesonNOW · 30/05/2013 11:01

M&S all the way. Never found any others that fit. They're good quality too

stickortwist · 30/05/2013 11:05

Another vote for sainsburys here. M and s are ok but much more pricy

NynaevesSister · 30/05/2013 11:48

M&S here too esp as son has no bottom to keep trousers up. Also, have had luck with Sainsbury's too - adjustable waist and I get the ones that have a zip and fasten so I can pull them in at the waist tight but he can undo to go to the loo. I think we only got those from age 6 though - not sure they do them with the zip at younger ages. However, they don't last anywhere near as long as the M&S ones.

DTisMYdoctor · 30/05/2013 12:22

Thanks everyone. M&S have a 20% off uniform just now, so I might try there. I'll keep an eye out for Sainsbury's getting their school uniform in too.

Any suggestions for best place to buy plimsolls? I see M&S do those too.

M&S slim fit are still too big on my DS. Next is better IMO than M&S for very slim boys.

freetrait · 30/05/2013 17:55

M and S don't fit my DS either, mind you he's tall and slim, but with short legs for his height, so quite a mix. I'm still after that pair of illusive "good fitting" school trousers. He wears one size smaller than his height, so the correct age actually, with adjustable waist from Tesco or BHS or Next. Perhaps I'll have to find a sainsbury's to check if they're any better.
