Teaching Assistants salary/ pay conditions

I have just got a new job as a Teaching Assistant. I forgot to ask what the salary was. It is only a level 1 position as that is the only job I could find, although I am qualified for level 3.

Can I be nosey and ask if you are a teaching assistant what level you are working at and what you salary or hourly rate works out at?

I feel a bit cheesed off as I have to be in school from 9am-3.00 BUT I only get paid for 5 hours work and not for lunch hour Sad

Feeling like I may earn next to nothing once it has been averaged out over the year.

Well I am still unsure because I am a numpty and not sure whether I will be level 1a/1b/1c/1/d.

Also, I do not know if my salary will definitely be spread over 52 weeks (working 38). Also, I am only paid for 25 hrs per week.

I estimate take home pay between £500-600 per month.

That's probably not far off :-)

I work 3 days 8.30-4pm, job is level 3 (although it's an independent school so pay is closer to level 2) my monthly take home pay is around £530. I love being a TA which is a good because the money is quite poor considering what's expected of us.

500-600 sounds about right for level one. I know I was on 7,300 per annum for every day, 9am-2.50pm.

I was paid hourly and the total pay was averaged out over the year so that I got a pay packet every month, the same amount each month (hope that makes sense)

Yes thank you - that makes sense Pink Smile

Well thanks everyone Thanks
I may come back in September after payday Grin

Brrr annoys me the rate TA's get paid. I am a newly qualified L3 and work 8.55 to 3.15 with 1 hour lunch and qualify for 25 hours per week - please tell me how that works. Apparently I get a 15 mins break in the morning - but do 2 days a week playground duty and another where I work in F1 where a morning break doesn't apply. We have a full team meeting one morning per week for half an hour and a KS meeting one lunchtime per week for half an hour - which we don't get paid for! If I didn't love my job sooooo much - I'd be better off cleaning toilets!

whoknowswho,
you need to check that your LA is one that has introduced single status. Assuming they have, you are paid on a scale for the job, based on an evaluation of what that job requires you to do. The pay for the job will be based on set number of hours for the pay scale, which is usually 37 hours for full year working. You are then paid a proportion of this for the level of time you are working per week and the weeks of the year you work. Based on working 8.55 to 3.15 with an hour off for lunch, that is 5 hours 20 minutes per day, which minus your 15 minutes coffee break would equate to 5 hours a day or 25 per week.

However if you are continually doing 2 days a week playground duty + the FI work + the agreed schedule of meetings you should be being paid for these. I would also question whether others, working in other settings such as the LA Offices, on your pay grade, are being paid for the lunchtime and coffee breaks or not.

Time I think for some questions to be asked, not at school level but at LA personnel office level. This is complicated and you need proper professional advice, so at best my comments should be taken as the ramblings of someone who has had some dealing with single status in the past.

Hi. Been reading this post as interested in going back into education as a TA.

I find the whole pro rata thing confusing.
my question is what’s an average monthly take home pay ??
