Hill House School in Knightsbridge - good place for black/mixed race DC

Hi,
Don't want to start a state/private debate, I would just like some advice about this school. We looked at it for our DC and liked the quirky feel and the destination schools. DH is black American and liked the fact that there is a sizeable US contingent in the school. However, talking to some local-ish friends, they have said that in recent years, new teachers all seem to fit a young, slim blonde profile. I visited again and was struck by the number of teachers matching this description, but I wondered if this just represented the profile of those applying for jobs in prep schools in the area. The DC are definitely not blonde and I don't want them to feel that they are in any way out of place (pupils of this ethnic mix seem under-represented in the prep school system generally) and I would like them to see adults around who reflect their background. Any opinions from current parents.
I am not suggesting conscious racism, more a recruiting "people like us" mentality.
TIA

Really tricky in this area to find a school with a good ethnic mix. Knightsbridge school on Pont Street has about 30% American intake, and quite a quirky ethos. Pretty much all the jnr school class teachers are blonde women though, and there's very few black children.

Eaton House has the greatest ethnic diversity - a biggish intake of Far Eastern and Asian children, but the curriculum is actually very traditional British and formal.

I always associate Hill House with old school English families or - randomly - Russians..

Very good school though - their reputation is solid, an the kids always seem cheerful, under control and with a good attitude.

Know of the school and kids there. They all seem wonderfully confident, polite and cheerful. I think the size and way they move around buildings gives them a feeling of independence rather than the protect wrapped up feel some prep school children have.
I know of an african american girl there and fits in fine, DC are very including nowadays. Hill House is a huge nationality mix and celebrates this.
My DDs went to a very white school but those who weren't white british were completely accepted and not seen as any different by the DC. I think it really isn't an issue.

Thank you for the replies. The school did seem nice. My concern isn't DC "fitting in" with or being included by the white british contingent, but rather that I want my DC to see people of a similar "look" in positions of authority. Teachers can be powerful role models for young children and I don't want the DC surrounded by blue-eyed blondes and feeling (on some level) that this is the look to which they should aspire. I would love to find a nice indie school where the ethnic mix of the teachers was as great as the mix of the children.
MY DC are fab Wink and I am confident that they will be happy in most schools, I just want to find one that will give positive subconscious messages about race and aspiration, as well as a good education.

I don't think the school is consciously selecting to a profile, I think - as you say - this is the pool of applicants, private prep school teachers tend to be upper middle-class, privately educated women, who are usually white. Not sure you'd find a private school with big racial mix in staff - I see quite a few schools for work and have never noticed more than one or two black faces. I take your point, though.

Thank you for all the replies and pms. I have been busy making appointments for some of the schools suggested. Smile
