Reception start dates

Do reception children start on the same week as everyone else? In our borough, the beginning of the autumn term will be on the 2nd September. I have a feeling that I read here before that reception children start later, but maybe I dreamt it Smile

I think it varies by individual school. At our school YR didn't start until 2nd week of term and then the ones without siblings started a couple of days before the ones with siblings. They also did a few weeks of half days first.

It varies greatly between schools, I would check your childs school to see what is happening. My son started reception last year, in July we recieved a letter with his start date, which days he would be doing half days/staying for lunch and when he would start full time.

Our school tends to start Y1 upwards mid week and new starters/reception start on the first Monday back. But all schools vary, another school in the area has reception start mid week and everyone else on the Monday after.

I'll check with the school, thank you.

Blimey. Sounds like a right ole rigmorole!

DD is due to start Reception. I think I'll just send her in on the first full day and up until then enjoy the cheaper and emptier holidays and activities.

Ours does it by age.

Those children whose birthday fall at the beginning of Sept start first. They take in 10 children a day so all children are in fulltime by the friday of the second week of term.

Goldchilled7up · 13/05/2013 17:30

Starlight that's what I was thinking. I'm planning a Holliday for the first week in September, i cant afford it earlier Sad but don't know if I should book it or not. I called the school, and was told that they only know the start date by mid June.

All our children start full time on the first day of term with all other year groups unless parents request otherwise.

StarlightMcKenzie · 13/05/2013 17:41

That seems most sensible mrz. Why can't we just have high expectatinos from the beginning and simply get on with it, offering opt-out for those who need it.

Goldchilled7up · 13/05/2013 17:42

It seems to be completely different for everyone. What happens if I book it and he misses the first week? Is it a problem?

Our school has the YR starting in the second day to allow the rest to calm down before the Reception children join.

In DD's year they started 10 a day, alphabetically. Last year I think they did it similar, so all children started by Friday of the first week.

I wouldn't book a holiday that could mean they miss the first week of any school year let alone reception. I don't think that would be doing your child any favours.
