Differences between KS1 and KS2

DS1 is moving up to year 3 in September. He is under the impression that it is going to be all change, he says he needs a desk and he will need to work harder.

He is diligent, works hard and is doing well. The desk is as much a "him" thing as anything to do with year 3.

So, how different is it actually going to be?

Yes, that's exactly it!

You have worded it better than me Grin

Tbh DS has coped with yr3 fine and likes the extra responsibility etc.

The only daunting thing was being the littlies in the playground again (3 playgrounds: 1 for nursery/reception, 1 for KS1 and another for KS2).

Don't they do those kind of lessons in KS1 Wellthen? Give the children a problem and they have to work out which methods they need to use ...

mrz I remember in KS2 my DC's teacher explaining to me that my DC was often a bit perplexed when had to use a method she was showing in maths rather than choose, even though they were both valid methods.

I think it was just because knowing more than one allows a repertoire of methods to be obtained. You can then pick your favourite / the most appropriate one for the particular problem posed.

I expect this happens all the way through the study of maths, each time something new is learnt. I'm certainly still learning new methods!

Which is why I found simpson's description of KS1 strange daftdame

Wellthen · 05/05/2013 09:43

Of course mrz, as I said: Not that strategy specific lessons dont happen in KS2 and mixed lessons dont happen in KS1, just a thought.

I was just trying to be a bit of a translator for simpson!

I think I understood what simpson was saying I just didn't see it as a difference between KS1 and KS2 ... I would expect direct instruction and independent application to be found in both key stages

I can only go on what DS's yr3 teacher says in the differences in his school.

It was mentioned in numeracy specifically.

Daftdame - I guess DS finds it the opposite Grin

I do now agree though that it is natural progression rather than a difference between KS1 andKS2. They have more responsibility as they naturally progress through the school.

I remember being Shock at the difference between reception and yr1 (PFB).

mrz · 05/05/2013 11:02

It wasn't meant to be a personal criticism simpson just trying to explain that it shouldn't be a difference

simpson · 05/05/2013 11:44

I did not take it as one honestly Blush

There is a reading/comprehension workshop in my DC school next week so I guess I'll find out the differences in that then as you get to go to each year group and see what they are doing in their literacy lessons.

mrz · 05/05/2013 11:49

I think the difference is developmental/progression in nature as each year builds on the previous one
