My 4 yo boy has no interest whatsoever in reading, writing or learning phonics. I have bought comics (power rangers which he likes), bought activity books ie dot to dot, maze with occasional letters etc I have just bought the tag system. The alphabet snake type games. Given him incentives to read a book (green level) to go to theme park he keeps talking about. But nothing seems to work.
Although he can read (if pushed) 3 letter words and knows most of his phonics he is in the 2nd from bottom group at school. Surely he needs a bit of enthusiasm to progress?

He has loads of interests, I always read 2 books at night (unless he's naughty) just wondering do you have any tips to make it fun for him?

Thank you feel a bit better and all is not lost. When my 2nd ds is in reception I will completely relax I am sure.

But makes sense about the silly words etc for boys yes my ds will appreciate that a bit more than the phonics books he is being introduced to.

I felt the school pushed. The teacher used the term 'ability groups' and has asked me to ensure that he writes over the half term etc (as I said before).

We sent our dds to a steiner kindergarten to avoid putting pressure on them too soon. Most children are not ready for formal learning at the ages of 4 and 5, even though many can do it.
My older dd wasn't at all interested in reading or writing and we put no pressure on her. She did 3 years at steiner where the focus is on grounding- through observation of the seasons, and marking seasonal festival and imitation of adults in baking, setting the table, clearing away, and the development of the imagination through story telling and creative play. Formal learning begins the year a child turns 7.
My dd started in year 2 at her local school, and because she was ready to learn, moved from level 0 to level 19 in one school year..
Let you dc enjoy their precious childhood!
