DD's spellings- I think I'm going to sob

I've just dug out DD's holiday spellings. i know I should have looked earlier but she's not going back until next Wednesday.

They include handkerchief, dictionary, beautiful, accident, encyclopedia, character and intelligent. There are 30 all together. Some of them are easier thankfully but lots are not.

She's 7 (year 2) and HATES spelling. We're in for some fun aren't we? Oh dear. Is it possible she's picked up the wrong list by accident or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

Any hints on how I can help her with these will be gratefully appreciated (and I think appreciate is on the list too)

I'm with swish !!! The weathers been crap and they have all worked hard in school and no out door lessons or extra fun in the sun that normally by now they would have had. No recharge at all.

Kids need a break that's what holidays are for!!!! They should be out playing and 30 spellings for a 7 yr old??? That's alot!!!

caffeine I couldn't agree with you more, which is why my DDs haven't touched their homework until this weekend - am treating Easter break as just another weekend lot of homework.

Obviously this will change as DD1 moves up through secondary school, but she's only in Yr7 now (and had less homework than DD2 did in Yr 5Confused!)

I am 33 and I now know dyslexic, even the thought of spellings brings me out in a cold sweat! It's just such a pointless exercise these days too, I don't really understand why anyone needs to sit and learn how to spell lists of words when we have very good spell checkers!

when we have very good spell checkers

A Little Poem Regarding Computer Spell Checkers...

Eye halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.

Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it two say
Weather eye am wrong oar write
It shows me strait a weigh.

As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee fore two long
And eye can put the error rite
Its rare lea ever wrong.

Eye have run this poem threw it
I am shore your pleased two no
Its letter perfect awl the weigh
My chequer tolled me sew.

because if you put the wrong real word in a spell checker it won't recognise it as wrong.

And whilst I was pondering a polite way to respond, mrz nails it, rendering me completely redundant. Grin

They're too hard for her age. Do one a day for a month if you must but time would be better spent reading. And don't worry.

multisensory approach for spellings to be learned in a hurry.

wite spellings in shaving foam on a tray/worksuface. funny noises for letters that my be missed... (eg i in soldier) using large body movements to spell words as well. I m hoping this method worked. I forgot to practise dd's spellings. was lulled nto a false sense of security by the rediculously easy topic words the prrevious week, only to be met with words like crucifiction... just before easter. also year 2

Well as of last night she could spell everything except intelligent. She's gone back to school and I think the test is today. If she gets 29/30 she'll be very pleased.

Was an odd collection though

Personally, I'd object to the spelling of encyclopaedia without the a, but then that's because I'm a pedant who enjoys the archaic versions of spellings Smile

Encyclopaedia without the 'a'.

Only acceptable in America, surely?

27/30. Phew glad that's over.

She says one girl came in with a note from her mum asking she shouldn't do the test but the teacher made her do it anyway!!

Juniper that's a good point but it seems to be the way its spelt these days. In the general trauma of the long list it hadn't crossed my mind

I'd have been interested to see what was on that note. Assuming it's true, the mum can't have head her head screwed on right, surely.
