KS1 Maths -- Partitioning Anyone?

DD1 is doing well in Y2 maths, but does ask me questions about partitioning. I have absolutely no idea how to do this, but it seems quite important to be able to show their answer on a number line.

Any books on this?

42+12= 40+10=50 2+2=4 50+4=54
Its the tens and units split up then added together.

Not sure how do it on a numberline though

Just looked at it again it would be possible but wouldn't you need 3 separate numberlines???

Unless you just do the final answer 50+4=54............I'm going to shut up now

ok, thanks. So it's separating into tens, ones etc...

For 42+12, you'd put 42 at the start of the number line, jump on 10 then jump on 2.
