Just wondering really. I can't get a word out of my ds, but I know he does it as a subject.

TIA

Its not too tricky in yr1 to combine literacy and numeracy into the class topic. Literacy especially as there is plenty of ways to practice reading/writing on the particular theme, but numeracy lessons could include comparing weights/sizes of animals (which are heavier, smaller etc.) and measurement concepts grams/kg/cm/metres or their life spans and cycles introduce time. They also did a field study on bugs found on the school field and used it to draw bar charts and graphs and do more than/less than/altogether type sums.

Thank you. I'm not too bad with the creative thinking side of it. I suppose I just wanted to make sure there was nothing key that I would be missing out, but it doesn't look like I would be if I just started with ds' interests and went from there.

I know one thing for certain though. I'll be learning alongside.

DS2 is in year 1. He is learning about the Arctic and Antarctic for geography, but includes all the animals that live there and how they adapt to their environment, which I guess is science. Then comparing them to how animals survive the winter in the UK.
In reception they studied London for Geography and compared it to the village where we live. (Topic in general was the Olympics). I was surprised quite how much he learnt in school, whenever a London skyline for example is shown on the tv he recognises it. He was really pleased when he went there on holiday and saw all the landmarks in the flesh.

No idea what they are doing for history though.

Silver Thanks. You know I'll have to take a very systematic approach. I won't be able to just jump in from nowhere talking about the past. There will be quite a bit of groundwork and contextualisation, not to mention visuals to make, before I can even talk about The Great Fire or anything really.

It's why I'm asking now. So I can plan and prepare.

DS is now in yr3 but I do remember him covering Henry the 8th (sorry numerals don't work on the iPad!!) and learning "divorced beheaded died etc" and they touched on the Great Fire of London (which was covered more in year 2.

I also read with year 2 kids in my DC school and know they were learning about Florence Nightingale the other week.

Geography wise he learnt about volcanos, dinosaurs, countries (this included eating foods from a particular country) and I can't remember any more sorry!!

DS loved a book about the Great Fire of London by Gillian Clements called "Great events - The Great Fire of London" which is a nice little book to read (his teacher borrowed it and read it to the whole class).

I found it on amazon, but can't link sorry Blush

Look I'll look for that, thanks Simpson
