What made you think of selective school?

I think it is important to say at the outset that I am not British and did not get educated here, so everything is 'allien' to me, including the existence of selective/grammar schools (I understand they are the same thing with different names)

My children are in the local school around the corner and I am just starting to realise that choices will have to be made in the near future about their secondary education but I do not have a clue.

They both are doing well academically (or so I think; the only indication I have is about my Y3 dd working at 3B level which I understand is above average but not exceptional; no levels known re my ds, who is in Y1)

Can someone help me with this? A link to a good guide? A book? Anything that helps me make decisions in the next 2/3 years.

It would be greatly appreciated

Probably the most important thing is whether you live in an area with selective secondary schools, there are not that many of them left - unless you want to go private. We have superselectives locally, but haven't really thought about where our children will go as the eldest is only in year 1 :o

I live in an area with a selective (girls) school in London. I don't know whethere there is a boys' one. One of the things I have never considered before was single sex education. I am uncomfortable with that but I do not think mixed selective schools exist (at least not around)
I really have no clue. Thank you very much RuedeWakening

Also, we are renting with no chance on earth to ever get enough money to pay for a property in London, so we could move in theory. In practice we are creating great links with our local community and it would be hard

If you Google 11 plus there is a website dedicated to it, with a forum, as well as advice about books, materials etc.

We are in Kent and my DS is halfway through Y4. People are just starting to think about whether their DC will take the test. It's very hard to get advice about whether your child should take it, the school aren't keen to commit, but they generally have a policy that anyone and everyone should take it.

There are no mixed grammars in our area that I am aware of, they are all single sex.

Most of our local state schools are partially selective (including two out of our closest three schools) so it's something that a lot of our local parents consider. The majority of children from our local primary schools sit the selection tests.

Thank you . I will google and try to speak with parents around too.
