Hi,
We are thinking of moving DD 5 years to a prep school from state primary. Considering Westbury House Prep school and The Study School both based in new Malden. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of either of these two schools please? Thank you.

I'm not sure how relevant my post will be as this thread was started sometime ago but, we went to the Study School Open morning the other week. The building itself is very outdated, it looks like it is stuck in a time warp. It Needs updating and a lick of paint. Westbury house however has just undergone a huge renovation and looks really smart. The teachers at both schools seemed lovely but i was shocked by some of the numbers at The Study! Personally we are looking for small class sizes for our little one and I wouldn't feel happy sending him to Nursery with 23 other children no matter how well resourced they are. I wasn't particularly impressed with the head at The Study either.

Going to see Westbury school only next month, so can't compare. Have you seen any other shools near Kingston?

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. Went to see The Study open day and had the same opinion. Rooms are very small and uncomfortable.

I have children at the Study School and yes it is a small school in a house in a residential road with the associated challenges. The benefits of this is a very personal, friendly atmosphere where all pupils interact with other age groups. It appears to develop well rounded confident children.

My DS had been at The Study all the way through from Nursery and it has been an amazing school for him. It's such an inclusive, nurturing school, where all the kids feel really cared for and valued and the teachers really do go, above and beyond, for the children.

It does really well academically, with kids going to the grammars and v selective indies, but it's much more than that. What sets it apart, is the opportunities it gives them. The range of sport on offer is fantastic, with every child being able to represent the school, not just a selected few. Some kids even go as far as competing at regional and national level.

There's tons of after school clubs (from zumba to engineering, sculpture, coding, cooking, lots of language clubs and a whole range of sports). Each day now starts with whole school yoga in the playground, for teachers too (and any parents hanging around!)

The music at the school is really fab too, with loads of kids learning an instrument. There are choirs, orchestra, ensembles, as well as lots of concerts and music inspired trips.

All in all, for such a small school, it offers so much, but the most important thing for me, has always been how caring and nurturing the school is, with a real family feel.

We looked at The Study School and Westbury School for our children and we found The Study to have a nicer atmosphere and energy to the place. We are so happy that we chose The Study - it is ethnically diverse, the teachers are very nurturing and our children have been very happy here. They're getting a wonderful all round education and are both doing very well. As parents we get involved with the school and as it's a small school, the teachers and headmistress really listen to our needs and are very responsive. It's a great school with great staff and happy children. All the children are encouraged to get to know each other and play together. The PTA/school organize events during the term and all the parents are encouraged to get involved. A real community feel. It is a great school x

My children have been at The Study for 4+ years. We also looked at Westbury house when deciding. Our decision was based on The Study children being so confident and happy, and an all-round curriculum. Westbury told us their sole focus was 11+ with no focus on sport. The small site and building at The Study is truly a tardis full of energy and activity. Your child will be pushed academically if they are able, or given extra support if needed- we are expecting to get into Grammars, or good Indie school. The music, art, activity clubs, breakfast and after school club facilities are amazing. Trips, music concerts, plays, music lessons, sporting fixtures are a big focus, so my children have had so many amazing experiences in their time there. A note on the Nursery - we moved from a local Nursery for Nursery 2 class (pre-school year) and wished we had moved sooner. Lots of activities including Cookery, Rugbytots, Yoga. Formal reading programme amongst lots of play activities.

Although any school that has shills posting on mumsnet actually probably has sufficient problems that it's a school to avoid.

Also agree last 3 postings sound as if written by the same person and are promotional rather than genuine parental comments. Happy to be corrected
