How many do you get and how many would you like?
Just thinking about restructuring ours, going from 2 to 3.....

I think its good to actually see the person who is going to be teaching your child. In P1 and P2 we can see the teacher at the end of the day as the children come out the office entrance. From P3 onwards the children are let out into the playground and make their own way out the gates so we never see the teacher at all. I like to have an idea of who the teacher/what they look like.

We have 3 - OCT TERM 1/ March Term 2/ and early July Term 3

Oct: How they're settling in, what they've been rated at for Writing and Maths (they won't give reading levels - I think they're frightened to).

March: How they're getting on so far. Is there any sign of improvement since Oct. Things we really need to focus on for the remainder of the school year.

July: Review of end of school year report. Things to work on over summer.

I think the meetings can be useful, but really depends on how prepared the teacher is and how willing they are to openly discuss your child. Some teachers just prefer the usual patter, lovely to teach, happy child, etc... and don't want to talk nuts and bolts - i.e. 'she can't subtract for toffee and we need you to help her more at home with that.' Other teachers are very matter of fact, '...tries hard but really struggles with writing, I've printed out this leaflet with ideas you might like to try at home.'

I prefer the latter style of teacher, rather than being told everything is lovely when it isn't (but my DDs have had struggles in various areas). It also lends the impression they actually are aware of what my child can and can't do.

We have 2 main parent's evenings plus additional ones for children we feel are under performing/struggling so problems can be addressed early before they become SEN.

We have one in February. I feel short changed now! We can of course arrange appointments if we have any concerns. I'm in Scotland so don't know if that makes a difference?

ilovepowerhoop · 15/03/2013 07:13

I'm in Scotland and we have 2 - march and November.

noramum · 15/03/2013 13:17

We have two, one before autumn half term and one before spring half term. Ater we get the reports there is an open evening where teacher will answer questions but this is obviously not the same as an appointment at a normal parent evening.

I would prefer a third proper one to know more who the report comes to its conclusion.

wheresthebeach · 15/03/2013 18:38

We have 2 - nov and feb. I'd prefer one end spring or beginning summer as I don't think it's enough of a gap. Also don't think ten minutes is enough for a proper conversation.

You can usually book a separate appointment, WTB, for longer time if that's what you need. PEve tends to be specifically about academic attainment I find, other issues best discussed at other times. PEve also good for working parents who need to schedule ahead.

We get 3, summer one is just a drop-in thing to query anything on end of year report. I only attend first 2.

Smooshy · 15/03/2013 21:28

We have 2 - October to see how they're settling in, and March. Then we get their reports in July and can make an appointment if we want to, but there's not an actual parents evening.

We also have a curriculum meeting at the beginning of the year to meet the teachers and find out what they'll be learning over the year.

FiveHoursSleep · 15/03/2013 21:49

We have three 20 minute parent/teacher meetings a year.
Our school hold theirs during the day, the teacher takes a couple of days out of class( we have a few floating teachers in school) and conducts the meetings.
They are really useful and frequent enough.

We have three in dd's primary, one with class teacher, one with literacy teacher (who isn't class teacher is dd's case) and one with maths teacher (again a different teacher)

jackjacksmummy · 19/03/2013 19:08
  1. We have 1 in November and the other in march. Reports come out a week before the end of the summer term.

However, I'm always able to go and speak to teachers/TAs and the SENco if I need to, which I do.

IrnBruTheNoo · 19/03/2013 19:21

Two. November and March. I'm happy with the status quo.
