reception - changing reading books - how often?

Hi. I'm just wondering how often other reception children get their books changed at school? I'm pretty sure dc1 (now in year 4) used to read to teachers twice a week and got books changed accordingly. Dc2 is currently in reception - they are lucky if their books get changed once a week and they are not always listened to reading. It's the same teacher/school and I'm wondering why the patterns have changed over the last couple of years. Is it due to new early years policies or due to a reduction in funding in schools (and reduced numbers of TA's)?

I read with yr1 kids and in an hour you can hear maybe 6 kids read...

DD is in reception and reads every night to herself and out loud. The library is our friend and so are the charity shops Smile

In DD's school, the books were changed roughly once a week. The children would read on school with a teacher/TA/helper and would take that book home once they were confident with it, and move on to a new book in class. The focus in her school is very much on classwork rather than homework.

In my DD's class they are able to change their books whenever they need to- they are encouraged to do it themselves by selecting from the appropriate box. However, if left to herself DD will keep the same book for days and days. Luckily, the book boxes are accessible to parents so I usually just change them myself when she 'forgets'.

I'm not sure how often she reads to the teacher or a TA. There are only 9 times recorded in her reading diary since September- I am seriously hoping that they read a lot more than this but don't record it every time. I think I will check at parent's evening next week.

Books are changed if they are returned to school with the reading record written in to say it has been read. So could be daily, weekly or less....
They do no one to on reading at all..............her reading record has been written in by a teacher/Ta twice since September, right at the start when she was given a book and then a week later when I had gone in to ask for a higher level.
According to DD they sometimes do guided reading but this is never written in .......(I have lots of questions for parents evening!!!!)

After 3 comments in the reading diary. The 3 comments can be from teachers or parents but he only gets listened to about once a week (they do guided reading too). So he usually ends up with a new book once or twice a week.

He gets a library book from school once as week too.

It works for DS. By the time he's read a book three times it's really sunk in but anymore than that and he'd get bored.

Sorry, I meant listened to at school (by a teacher or TA) once a week. He reads to me or his dad every night.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 14/03/2013 21:17

Meant to be Monday, Wednesday and Friday but this hasn't been happening, DS bored here.

The reason I posted on here was mainly to get a feel of whether the situation at our school was the norm or not, especially as it seems to have changed since dc1 was in reception. I'm getting the impression most schools seem to read more often, so I don't understand why some posters have taken offense at the 'short-changed' comment.

I also didn't imply anywhere in my posts that school reading books are the only source of reading for my child. We go to the library, buy books and read other material together. I am just concerned at the back seat reading seems to have taken at our school recently. This week, for example, we've been told they can't change their reading books as the teachers don't have time due to other activities. This isn't the first time that has happened.

By canvassing opinion I've realised this isn't the norm and I now have more confidence to pop in and speak to the teacher about my concerns. Thanks for all the helpful comments Smile

Never mind about book change frequency, just wishing there was a blardy receptiony/reading thread where the same posters didn't appear every time alluding to the same facts about their dc and how long their books take to read because they are "free readers" now and how the teacher is trying to encourage them to try different genres etc. Etc. Bored now.

Try the Oxford owl website, it has loads of free ebooks on to read which is great as it saves ££!!!

Sommink · 14/03/2013 22:30

My dd's in FS2 (reception) her book is changed everyday because we read her school book every night and write in her diary, if parents are unable to read the book given then it isn't changed until either it is read with the teacher or the parent. She reads to a teacher/TA at least once a week, sometimes 2/3 times especially if she is getting close to changing levels. I guess each school finds a system they feel works with the amount of staff and time they have?!

noisytoys · 15/03/2013 09:25

Iamnot it is always the same posters (you) who put down anyone with DCs who are doing well at school. If you don't like people with reception age children posting on threads about reception age children, why read the thread?

givemeaclue · 15/03/2013 10:52

Once a week or more often by request. nAlso have bug club access from school for all kids so have access to lots and lots of books on line so can go reality read as many as they want
