Parents evening on Monday.
Am having some angst :)
Ds1 is in y5. Had had lost if problems with literacy (dx of severe dyslexia) but has been making great strides with our and the schools help.
His school use the accelerated reader programme. He is currently on level 4.8.
The books are a Bit boring tbh.
At home he is reading dinosaur cove and how to train your dragon books which if I have understood my google search correctly HTTYD is a high level 4?
Should I mention this to the teachers next week?
It seems that there is a bg gap between what he is reading at school and at home?
TIA x

Yes mention! Nor pushy to want to keep your son engaged in reading

HellesBelles396 · 09/03/2013 07:50

usually, books read independently are lower level than those read with support.

Badvoc · 09/03/2013 07:54

Hi hellesbelles...sorry, I don't understand your post.
Ds is on level 4.8 at school and the HTTYD are level 6 and above as I understand it.

Yes, mention it. It won't seem remotely pushy. They should be pleased that the hard work has paid off and that he is reading from choice at home. They may also be able to find him something more interesting to read at school.

sorry badvoc when we give out recommended text levels to teachers, we normally give a student's reading age or level, or slightly above, for supported reading and up to a year or level below for independent reading. so, if you are expected to hear your son read his accelerates reader - as is the case at my school - it should be at a higher level than books he is able to read on his own.

Badvoc · 09/03/2013 10:40

Hmmm that's what I thought which isn't the case ATM.
Will mention it, thanks.

At our school chn move up a level on accelerated reader if they score above 85% on the comprehension quiz after reading the book. 85 % means the level is suitable and below 85 % means the book is too challenging.

Badvoc · 09/03/2013 13:32

He tends to get 90-100% ATM

Comprehension quiz? Have never heard of that! I am intrigued!

Have been watching this thread with interest as I am currently struggling with my ds and his reading issues.

Is it a general quiz? Or book specific?

Badvoc · 09/03/2013 13:38

It is book specific.
It is a comprehension test on the book they have just read.
He tends to score fairly highly.
Unless the book has really bored him.

I know on the dinosaur cove books he was getting 100%.
He hasn't done a quiz on the HTTYD books as be reads them at home.

He should be moving up to the HTTYD fairly soonish then if he's doing well on most of the quizzes then?

Badvoc · 10/03/2013 13:12

Not sure...they don't seem very proactive tbh.
I have flu ATM so may not even be going tomorrow now :(

I would just ask the teacher how they know when the chn are ready to move up a level, and take it from there. The good thing about AR (IMO!) is that it is easy to see when chn should be moving on.
