How much homework do your Yr 2's get?

We're struggling with the amount of homework DS gets - he gets on with it fine, no grumbling, but it just seems to eat in to family time so much and I wondered if this was normal before going in to school and saying something.

This week he has had:
15 spellings (words like traipsed, meandered) which HAVE to be written out at least 3 times (even if he knows them) and a minimum of 5 sentences useing the words.
Listen to him read for at least 15 minutes a day
Times Tables - for multiplication and division tests next week (2 different tables)
One page of Schofield & Simms Mental Arithmetic 1, Section 2. Plus the test from the previous section.
A loose maths sheet which was to do with working out questions like "if it was Friday on 1st October 1998, what day of the week was the 31st October 1999?)
2 handwriting practice sheets
He also had to write a note about his favourite book, the characters in it and get together a prop that reminded him of his favourite character for World Book Day next week.

In half term I mentally totted up how long we spent doing homework and it was nearly 10 hours in total. And this was with him just cracking on and doing it. I personally didn't want him to have any homework in half term. He's an able child so not actually struggling with the content/level, but just seems so much??

What are other Yr 2's getting?

That's a huge amount. We get 20 spellings a week, plus one maths problem that usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. Oh, and reading of course.

Crickey Shock
Dd2 gets...
10 spellings
Couple of maths sheets
Reading

teta · 02/03/2013 09:55

Is this year 2 as in 6/7 year olds?.Mine has reading every night and 10 spellings a week[not long words like meandering].Gosh, even my sisters dc2 who goes to a private junior school that feeds into the top private schools in manchester[manchester grammar etc] don't have that much.Do you live in hk/parts of Asia?

redskyatnight · 02/03/2013 09:59

That is broadly the volume of homework my DS is getting in Year 4 (and I think it's too much then let alone year 2!) Though I'd say he spends up to 45 minutes on school nights. 10 hours is ludicrous.

DD is in Y2 and gets

  • 10 spellings per week, encouraged to write sentence for each one but this is optional OR mental maths/times tables to practise
  • read for 15 minutes a day (though she does more because she loves reading)
  • one additional longer piece of work per week alternating between maths and English (this week it's to do with writing sentences using adjectives)
Scootee · 02/03/2013 10:02

That sounds massive.

My yr2 get:

1 maths sheet (5-10 mins) and on that night, no reading.
1 set of spellings to learn for the week (10 words). Also need to write a sentence using each word. No reading on that night.
Other 3 nights, just reading 10-15 mins.
That is it. Nothing for weekends/half term/holidays.

WorkingtoohardMama · 02/03/2013 10:08

My yr 2 gets 10 spellings, 1 or 2 maths worksheets, a literacy worksheet and a literacy exercise (this week it's to plan a fairy tale) plus reading every night, sounds like your school is issuing a lot more homework than other schools.

FluffyDavis · 02/03/2013 10:12

Wow that is a lot.
Ds2 only has reading!

Homework starts in year 3 and will be weekly maths sheet, 10 spellings and reading.
They will also set hol homework, something like write a review of a movie you've watched.

There is no way we could fit in all that homework with after school activities.

AuntieStella · 02/03/2013 10:19

That's a lot!

Mine are a bit older now, but IIRC, in year 2 they were expected to read out loud for approx 10 minutes a day, had 10 spelling words weekly, had one English worksheet a week and one maths (each meant to take 10-20 minutes). I think there was a bit of times table chanting too, and once in a blue moon there would be something connected to a project.

pukkapine · 02/03/2013 10:34

Ok he's clearly getting far too much. New teacher since January and it's just ramped up. I've written a note in his homework journal and will try and catch his teacher next week. I just resent how much time is taken up by it when in my view he's 6 he should be playing!

That's ludicrous! Please please say something to the teacher, but also take it up with the HT, as homework policy is usually a top-down thing. I can see encouraging reading, and the consolidation of basic skills like multiplication tables. But that should be it.

Homework for primary school children should be banned extremely limited. They are children, FFS!

Taffeta · 02/03/2013 15:33

My Y2 gets nothing.

Nothing.

She is on the Read Write scheme and her spellings stopped. She brings home random books that she reads to me.

I supplement at home as otherwise she'll be behind. She does some writing and Maths Factor x 5 pw, 10 minutes apiece each time.

littleducks · 02/03/2013 15:37

DD gets quite a bot. TBH i prefer the sound of your homework, perhaps the grass is always greener though. We get 'fun' actvities as part of the family home learning programme (read stuff that requires adult help and expenditure). So models to make and cakes to bake and we were told to go on a visit to library in half term (we didnt i was working) which manages to wind me up no end.

wow - that is shed-loads! And I moan about my DD's homework!

She's in Yr 2 and has 1 set of 10 spellings per week. Then either a Numeracy or Literacy activity from one of those homework books, sometimes both. Then at least one reading book per week.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 02/03/2013 15:48

That's a ridiculous amount, I dread to think how the less able children would be able to deal with all that. Must be soul destroying :(

It really is far far far to much!!! When r they meant to eat or play?
