re: where to advertise for part-time Primary teachers.

Bit of background in case you wonder why I haven't heard of the TES: I teach in Central London and, since DD1 was born 8 years ago, have been employed on a 0.8 (specified as 4 particular days) basis. I've changed schools a couple of times by applying for fulltime posts, explaining that I'm only available 4 days per week and being lucky enough to apply to schools where the Heads have been willing to employ a part-time teacher. There aren't many adverts for part-time Primary teachers in the TES, hence my having always applied for fulltime ones.

My current Head has taken seriously my suggestion that the school should actively try to recruit a number of ex-teachers, possibly parents who stopped teaching when they had DC of their own, to work part-time. However, my brainwave stopped short of ideas as to where to advertise for ex-teachers who haven't yet realised that what they need in their lives is a 1.5 day-per-week teaching job. My best suggestion* was to advertise at playgroups or on Mumsnet grin.

So, if you were a teacher once upon a time but no longer read the TES/similar, where else would you suggest? I posted this in AIBU earlier but managed to do so repeatedly Blush so fear posters may not reply because they think I am unhinged Confused.

*I think it's obvious why I don't work in advertising!

What about the 'what to do with your kids' magazines like ABC or Primary Times? You know- the freebies that go in kids book bags every half term and sit on the counter at playgym!

Good idea BTW.

If you have any ideas where to advertise to find good SEN teachers let me know!!

Your local paper. I presume those you would recruit, would all be local to the school, as you are not going to up sticks and move for a one day a week job.
Our local paper used to have a 'jobs night' so people who didn't normally have it would buy it on a Thursday.

Your LA website - doesn't it have a page of teaching jobs ? If not - then suggest it to the LA - seems the most obvious.

Thanks for the ideas-I'm thinking that people from slightly further afield might be interested (even if they don't realise it yet!) as the school is very close to London Bridge station so is an easy commute from quite a distance away. Maybe one of those sponsored ads that pop up when browsing online is what's needed?

Does each borough (or the city as a whole) not have an online job list? I know that most counties do. That's not meant to sound unhelpful. An know that round here, part time jobs are like gold dust and very rarely come up. When they are advertised, they are hugely over subscribed!

BackforGood · 02/03/2013 13:18

That's what I was thinking Littlefish. If you were looking for PT work, and a borough / LA were accessible to you, then you would look on their website, even if you didn't live in the authority yourself.

SE13Mummy · 02/03/2013 16:23

Yes, there are borough lists and any advert will go there by default but I think we need to advertise somewhere that people who aren't looking for a job will see it and will be inspired to return to work.

it sounds like you have specific people in mind, OP.

SE13Mummy · 02/03/2013 16:35

No-one specific, just trying to work out how to reach all those ex-teachers that are out there.

BackforGood · 02/03/2013 16:37

I already think there's enough competition for PT teaching jobs, without creating more! They are like gold dust IME, and there are far more people already looking, than there are jobs available.

lljkk · 02/03/2013 16:37

Parent+T groups, maybe, SE13. What are those ex-teachers doing if it ain't working?

Inclusionist · 02/03/2013 17:59

BackforGood you say that but my school, and many others in the vicinity, have terrible difficulty recruiting.

We are understaffed by several at the moment with both local and national advertisements only raising a flutter of interest.

Not in your area unfortunately but I'd love a 1.5 job. I'd wondered about writing to schools direct but presumably they'd think I was nuts and wouldn't bf allowed to offer it anyway? (secondary).
