The Angel of Death

My 5 yr old, yr 1 daughter woke up last night in tears because the 'angel of death' was in her room. It was typical nightmare stuff and she was fine in the morning. Turns out they had watched 'The Prince of Egypt' at school as part of their RS lesson. I asked her class teacher about this when I dropped her off and she said that it was part of the curriculum and a few children every year get upset- it usually passes. This is all very well , but I just watched the angel of death scene on youtube and I don't think I would have been happy to let her watch it at home. I am not usually a sensitive or fussy parent but feel like going back to the school and asking that they warn parents of this in the future or find a different way to teach it. Has anyone else had this experience?

Just watched it, and wouldn't be thrilled for my 5yr old (or 7yr old) to see it.

I think there are better ways to teach the curriculum.

But now that it's done, would I complain and kick a stink? Not sure I would.

The problem is that even the most innocent thing can scare some children, while the others love it. My dc watched that and didn't pick up on it, and my middle one is very very sensitive.

I don't think it would be unreasonable for them to warn parents, so they were prepared with answers to questions. Particularly if they can provide a you-tube link for them to watch it.

I think that is just how I would feel if I didn't have other kids that will be going through the same experience when they get to year 1. If I knew that she was going to see it then I may have been better prepeared to deal with the consequences. Instead she got me, a bit impatient and tired, wondering what she was talking about. I think I will just suggest that as it seems to be a recurring problem ( a few children getting upset) informing the parents that they have seen it may be appropriate. They do go to a lot of trouble to inform parents about the ways they teach literacy and numeracy, but not other subjects- yet questions about what they've learnt in RS are the most difficult questions we get at home! I may be being over sensitive as we have had rather a lot of death amongst family and friends this year, including a close friends little girl.

The white mist is the stuff of childhood nightmares, I agree totally.

Neither of my DDs would like the angel of death scene, the two children becoming still sleeping next to their mother and the covering a child's face with a sheet at the end is the stuff of every mothers' nightmares too.

Absolutely no need to show a film to tell the story of Moses, very thoughtless lazy teaching. I would have been furious as I'm certain that would have really up set DD2.

DD1 was not happy at having to watch the end of Ann Franks diary twice, in Y6, it makes her cry.
