Is it correct that many children at this stage in year 1 can't mentally add any numbers apart from 1+1 which takes a minute or 2 to work out?

The specialist teacher who I spoke to in school told me it was but my experience with NY older 2 children tells me differently so I just wanted to check that it wasn't me expecting too much.

He has had his verbal and non verbal learning assessed at average for his age. Thanks

I don't think that sounds right. I think in Reception they learn to add and subtract numbers up to ten. I'd imagine that some can do these simple calculations in their heads (or using their fingers.)

Yes it's true many children continue to require concrete apparatus (counters, cubes or fingers) to add two numbers in Y1 and even into Y2.

Thanks Mrz.

As he has been struggling with gaining literacy skills (still on phase 2 letters and sounds) and has phonological processing difficulties the clinical psych who has recently diagnosed selective mutism said she strongly suspected dyslexia and dyscalculia.
