Syllables - question for teachers

We read a book on Oxford owl, the activity at the end was about syllables.
I felt I explained it poorly to DD but she absolutely grasped it. Now she's singing and talking in exaggerated syllables. Funny and cute so everyone has joined in.

When is this usually covered in primary school? I'm a bit worried it will interfere with sounding out phonics. She's in yr 1.

We start teaching syllables in nursery

Children will normally be familiar with clapping the syllables in their name and other words.

I could hear her sounding out phonics in words and then switching to syllables for the same word. Maybe she just didn't know the word syllable Grin

Our nursery teacher calls them "claps" we don't introduce the word "syllable" until reception.

It's really useful to teach her to sound out the syllables in longer words then put them together.

I have recently been working in year 1 and we just started to look at syllables.

Phew. Thanks! 'twas only a mild panic that I had inadvertently taught her something confusing.

It's much easier to read oct/o/pus or butt/er/fly
