Moving house, and getting school place....

Hiya,

We're catchment for a great school, thankfully, and have applied for DD to start in September.

What would be the impliocations of us now moving out of catchment?
(We still want DD to attend that school, and would still be within walking distance).

Thanks!

Thanks!

So hopefully the place will be confirmed on the 22nd April.
Our house isn't even on the market yet, so I'm sure we wouldn't be moving until the summer anyway.

Do you think it's best to wait until September?

AS Tiggytape says as long as you have been offered a place on the 22nd April and you are still in the house that you used for the application, then there should be no real problem. It is worth checking on the LA website exactly what the wording is around moving house because a few LAs have some wording that in effect says you have to be in the same house that you applied from when you start school. It is, to my way of thinking, a grey area as to whether this stance is legal but hopefully it does not apply to your LA.
You do need to tell the LA when you are moving if it is between April and September, if for no other reasons than a contact address. But sense would say do not do that before you have exchanged contracts as there is no point in provoking any possible concern from the LA if it can be avoided. After your child starts in September would be best.

Thanks everyone!

I did look on my LA website, but couldn't find anything about moving after the deadline, only moving before.

Admission, it is interesting that you say it is a grey area about moving between offer day and the start of school.

I know that some children lost their places at a local secondary following investigation of their address once they started in September, and had understood that was because they had moved since the offer was made .. perhpas it was that they had moved back to a permanent address from an in-catchment temporary address taken solely for the purpose of gaining admission? Or perhaps that a routine address check had revealed than an incorrect address had beengiven to obtain the school place in the first instance?

Neither of these apply in this case, but I suspect that I live in one of the LAs who have tried to introduce such wording!
