Phase 2 letters and sounds week one?

Ds is in Reception and has just been given a little leaflet booklet to read called phase 2 letters and sounds which is the first reading material that has been given to him.

I've seen the other children with books but i'm not overly worried as Ds does have a diagnosed language disorder. I have been told he is keeping up with the other children and is no problem but i think maybe i should be pushing for more 1:1 help if he is falling behind.

What i'm wondering is at what age or stage Reception children would be expected to start the phase 2 booklets. Is it classed as being behind his peer group? I'm pretty sure i'm told he is doing fine as they know i will make a fuss for additional support which they struggle to provide but i might be being too pushy if he is doing okishConfused

It really depends on the school. When I taught reception we started phonics (equivalent to phase 2) on the first day of school in September but other schools delayed starting until after half term others until January ... so there isn't any standard expectation of where a child will be working.

Thankyou Mrz. I wish all schools would follow exactly the same routine because it would make it easier for me to plot where he should be compared to everyone else!

If they all started phase 2 in Sept then i would know he is 6 months behind which would be a simple comparison for meSmile

Some schools start older children first and then the summer borns so it isn't clear even within the same class.

Also some schools stream them for phonics.

DD is in reception with 80 other kids and for phonics they are split into 3 groups according to ability and taught by 3 different teachers at the same time.

They will be covering different phases I guess...

When DS was in reception (he is in yr3 now) he could not read at this point of the school year.

It's one of the reasons the phases are stupid unnatural
