DS is starting to get into trying to read things for himself, which is really great and I am for encouraging it. He mostly likes looking at (sometimes sounding out words) the Asterix comics and the Beano... thing is lots of the type face is quite tricky and/or in capitals which is making it hard. I just know if i could find something similar to the content but aimed more at his level he would be off..... Anyone got any recommendations?

Without having looked closely at typeface, how about the Tom & Jerry comic? It's got some activities, some cartoon stories, & isn't too wordy.

Will check it out, thanks. Think comic type books would work too...

Captain underpants but maybe still a bit young - best bet would be to just visit the library and see what you find. I've now passed on the books my kids had at that age so can't really check inside anymore. But I know the early books they had were things like Flat Stanley, the Dinking Dings books and seem to remember something called Stink maybe?

Their reading comes on so fast. When he is wee bit older, there is a series of Beano books - A Dennis the Menace Series of little short books with some illustrations. My boys probably read these about age 5/6 but they are also okay for reading to them and they still occasionally pluck them off the shels now and they are 11 & 12!

Dinosaur cove? Might still be tricky but you could read it together?

PolkadotCircus · 20/02/2013 12:37

Hmmm. I think you'd be better off with easier words in first reader type paperbacks. Some of the vocab is hard, print tiny and in capitals in comics.

Think we started with The Magic Treehouse /Corgipups books to begin with.Do a MN search, there are several threads on this.

Somebody needs to do a MN book list for first readers in an order of difficulty.

I don't normally recommend "reading schemes" to parents but have you seen Pearsons Comics for Phonics range

therontheron · 20/02/2013 13:21

isn't there a series of books called comix? I see them in the school reading book collection... Here is a link to one of them [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Monster-School-Comix-Garry-Kilworth/dp/0713660996]
