He is year 4 (8) very quiet, not much of a "join iner" sort of boy so I was just wondering if anyone had expierience of their child "suddendly" starting to wear glasses,

Do children ie classmates of his age take it for granted or is he in for a bit of "stick/teasing" ?

I wear glasses so do alot of people in the family so it is nothing new to us but when I started wearing them I did get teased but that was yr 7 new people and stuff and I had just started wearing a brace as well.

Just wanted to be prepared ?

We chose his frames today and he likes them and they are only going to be for black/white board stuff.....mildly short sighted.

I know I am being silly but he has had so many confidence issues at school that he has overcome I just hope this doesn't set him back

Thanks

Do many of his classmates wear glasses? DS has worn glasses from age 3 so slightly different, but by end of year 3 (when he changed school) over half the class wore glasses. At new school, he is the only child in his year group who wears them! Never been a problem so far.
When he got them age 3 none of his little friends even noticed! Good luck!

I would instruct him on what to say if anyone asks about it.

At least 8-10 kids in DS's class wear glasses including one girl who just started wearing them this sept with no issues other than the usual questions from classmates etc (but not in a nasty way) this is yr3 btw. I am good friends with the girl who needed glasses from sept mother and she was more worried about it than her DD was.

I would have a quiet chat with the teacher to keep an eye on things too as that can only help.

Thank you both for replying ....yes ...prepare him for questions that might arise is a good one ...just general childrens inquisitivenes as apposed to being nasty

I am going to speak to teacher but TA works with him more so her as well

I am overthinking this I think !!Grin

ds started wearing glasses overnight some time ago now. Nobody commented, but do have a spare pair! I've lost count how many times the arm has fallen off or someone has walked past his desk and apparently managed to knock them on the floor and then stand on them! They can then take nearly a week to be mended. Main problem he had was with games teachers (he can't see the ball properly without them!) and do make sure he has a hard case to keep them in if they are only for board work etc

Dd yr3 started wearing them this week and hasn't had any problems with classmates so far (she's quite shy herself). My main concern is losing/breaking them. I did mention to the teaching that she would be starting to wear them.

My son started wearing glasses 2 years ago - there was only one other boy in his class who wore them but it didn't seem to matter. Nowadays the glasses are quite smart - in fact my son's glasses are very similar to mine. Originally it was just for reading the white board but when he realised everything looked so much clearer he wore them all the time. Would repeat the "keep a spare pair" though as they get broken or mislaid.

Red2003 · 20/02/2013 10:59

Sorry just to add my son was in Year 2 when he first got the glasses.

Oh yes - the repairs!!!!!! DS now y6 keeps a spare spare at the school office (he needs his glasses all the time).
ALWAYS be nice to your local optician!!!!!
Make friends with a local optician so you can pop round to their house at 9pm at night!!

LABRO - ds has a pair of sports goggles that he wears. These did cause him some problems (his own reluctance, not being teased) the first two times he wore them, but other boys were said he looked cool. (relief) Maybe ds is lucky to have nice friends / football team, but the only thing it stops him doing is being in the scrum in rugby, and I am quite relieved about that actually!!!

I don't think anyone has ever said anything to DD.

Weirdly, I got teased for everything else, just existing seemed to be a crime, but no one said anything when I turned up in glasses in Y6.

(There was one other girl in our class who had always worn glasses since age 5.)

DD got glasses halfway through P1 and (AFAIK) has never had any negative comments at all. One of her friends was so jealous that she convinced the teacher that she was going to be getting them too. We did have to explain to her that it's not a good idea to let friends try them on both because it could hurt their eyes and because they might not be as careful as her, and also that when she takes them off (eg for gym or playtime) they MUST go into the case and onto the teacher's desk for safety.

DS got glasses about a year ago just turned 3 and again no issues at nursery (apart from the regular repairs needed due to being an active pre-schooler).

It's difficult the first year as if you want a spare pair you won't get any help towards the cost, but after than you can just keep last year's pair as spares in emergencies.

The usual reason for kids getting grief about glasses is when they forget/refuse to wear them and then the teacher has to turn into a nag always reminding them to wear their glasses!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 20/02/2013 14:00

DS1 got glasses in Yr4 and DS2 in YR nobody commented. I think it is so common these days for children to wear glasses younger and the choice of frames is better that it isn't a big deal any more.
